Because they do not stand and walk like humans, but stoop and walk, they are animals. Because they go and do not return, or because they are thirsty, they are hungry ghosts. Because their minds are strong, or because they are the sons of Brahma, the lord of beings, they are humans. Because it is located to the east of Mount Sumeru in relation to Jambudvipa, and because its body is particularly tall and beautiful, it is Purvavideha. Because they give cows and live on them, and because they enjoy cows, they are Godaniya. Because they speak unpleasant words, or because they make unpleasant sounds when dying, they are unpleasant to hear because they are dying. Because it is marked by the Jambudvipa tree located on the shore of the northern ocean, on the shore that is not warmed by the sun, it is Jambudvipa. The reason why the south is not mentioned is because the other directions are divided with reference to this. Because they belong to the retinue of the Four Great Kings, or because they are located in their abodes, they are the retinue of the Four Great Kings. Because those who have done good deeds are born there together, or because there are thirty-two ministers and thirty-three ministers, they are the Thirty-three Gods. Because they are separated from the fighting between gods and asuras, they are the "Non-contention," or because they are born as twin gods, or because they encourage each other to do good, they are the Yama Gods. Because the joy and happiness of the Dharma are particularly great, it is Tushita. Because they enjoy their own emanated enjoyments, they are the Nirmanarati Gods. Because they have power over the enjoyments emanated by others, they are the Paranirmitavasavartin Gods. Because they eliminate sinful dharmas, and because they belong to the retinue of Brahma, they are the Brahmaparisadya Gods. Because they sit before the Great Brahma and utter words, they are the Brahmapurohita Gods. Because their lifespan and color are longer than other Brahmas, they are the Mahabrahma Gods. Because their light is small in relation to their upper realm, they are the Parittabha Gods. Because the light of the lower realm cannot be measured, they are the Apramanabha Gods. Because they illuminate all other places, they are the Abhasvara Gods. Because the happiness of the mind is considered virtuous, and because it is smaller than its upper realm, it is the Parittasubha Gods. Because the happiness of the lower realm cannot be measured, it is the Apramanasubha Gods. Because happiness greatly increases, they are the Subhakrtsna Gods. Because the land is like a cloud without folds, it is the Anabhraka Gods. Because it arises from immovable karma, it is the Punyabhirata Gods. Because it is related to other places

Because it is greater in result than all children, it is the great result. Because the stream of consciousness of the six aggregates is cut off and exists, it is without consciousness. Because it is not mixed with ordinary people, it is not great compared to other higher ones, so it is not not great. Because one obtains special samadhi, there is no suffering of afflictions, so it is not without suffering. It is extremely peaceful and beautiful before the eyes, so it is a splendid appearance. Because the view of seeing is pure and good, it is very visible. Because the place where it exists has no other qualities such as water level better than this, it is Akanistha. Or because it is the end of form, it is the end of accumulation. At the time of practicing absorption, the appearance of thinking that space is infinite arises, therefore it is the sphere of infinite space. Similarly, the appearance of thinking that consciousness is infinite, and the appearance of thinking that there is nothing to be grasped, therefore it is the sphere of infinite consciousness and the sphere of nothingness. Thinking that consciousness is fruit and pain, and that unconsciousness is complete ignorance, and because weak consciousness arises, therefore it is the sphere of neither consciousness nor non-consciousness. How is this world of sentient beings determined? For this, the former Tibetan scholars gathered various statements that did not conform to the sutras and treatises and explained them extensively. However, these are only exhausting themselves in vain. Here, we do not bother to gather various contradictory statements, nor do we follow the statements of those who are shallow. So how to explain it? This teacher is well-versed in what is stated in the Abhidharma sutras of the Great and Small Vehicles, and presents them coherently in very clear and beautiful language. As stated in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, we will explain it as it is. The intermediate summary arising from this is: Numbers and places and measures, The measure of life and enjoyment, Birth and bodies, Causes and conditions are all vast. Thus it is said. So, the determination of the number of realms of the world of sentient beings is like this: there are three realms, the desire realm.
