There is a creature called "Sharp-Beaked Insect" that pierces the skin and flesh of those beings, drilling all the way to their bones and marrow. Connected to the swamp of decaying corpses is a path filled with razors. When beings walk on it, their skin and flesh are cut off as they place their feet; when they lift their feet, the wounds grow back again. Connected to the path filled with razors is a forest of sword-like leaves. When those beings rest there for shade, sword-like leaves fall from the trees, cutting off and splitting all the limbs and joints of those beings. When they fall there, wild dogs peel off the flesh from their backs and eat it. Connected to that forest is a grove of iron Shalmali trees. When those beings arrive there, they are forced to climb up and down. When they climb up, the thorns point downwards; when they climb down, the thorns point upwards. From that ground, their limbs and joints are pierced and torn apart. There is a creature there called "Iron-Beaked Crow" that lands on the shoulders or heads of those beings, pecking out and eating their eyeballs. Connected to the grove of iron Shalmali trees is a river called "Immeasurable River," filled with boiling molten water. When those beings fall into it, beings holding clubs and other weapons stand guard on both sides of the river. They do not allow those beings to come out. If they try to climb out, they are placed face-up on a huge, blazing fire and asked, 'Hey! What do these beings want?' They say, 'We do not know, nor do we see, but we are hungry and thirsty.' Then, their mouths are opened with iron tongs, and molten copper from an iron pot filled with flames is poured in. From that ground, they experience prolonged suffering until their sinful deeds are exhausted. Thus, the path filled with razors, the forest of sword-like leaves, and the iron Shalmali trees are all gathered together.

There are four more (hells). Those beings born in the cold hells will experience such cold suffering: those born in the Blister Hell are struck by the great wind there, and their whole bodies shrink as if covered in blisters, so that hell is called the Blister Hell. The distinction of the Bursting Blister Hell is this: they shrink as if blisters are bursting, so that hell is called the Bursting Blister Hell. Sothamthampa, Kyihud Zewa, and Achu Zewa are named after the sounds they utter. The hell that splits like a blue lotus is this: struck by the great wind there, the skins turn blue and split into five or six petals, so that hell is called the hell that splits like a blue lotus. The distinction of the hell that splits like a lotus is this: the skin turns from blue to red and splits into ten or more petals, so that hell is called the hell that splits like a lotus. The distinction of the hell that splits like a great lotus is this: the skin turns completely red and splits into a hundred or more petals, so that hell is called the hell that splits like a great lotus. The beings in the ephemeral hells will experience such suffering arising from their respective karmas. Like the bull demon of Rajagriha (王舍城), who comes from the sky with a dangerous cry like a collapsing building; the disciples of the bull demon, born on a pile of stinking bones, are pecked at by crows, etc. Furthermore, they will experience things like the Jataka tales of Phagpa Gedun Odsung. Thus, the suffering of hell is immeasurable. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: 'The pain of being struck violently by three hundred short spears in one day here, is unbearable even as a small part of the minor suffering of hell, let alone experiencing it all!' As it is said. Furthermore, animals kill each other, the strong killing the weak. They are also involuntarily killed, beaten, and harmed.

It also becomes a benefit for gods and humans. However, from that basis, various kinds of suffering will be experienced. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, blood, flesh, and leather. Others, helpless, are beaten and cooked with hands, feet, and iron implements. So it is said. In short, there are three types of pretas: those with external obstructions to food and drink, those with internal obstructions to food and drink, and those with obstructions to food and drink themselves. The first is: Some beings are born in the realm of pretas because they have relied heavily on miserliness. They are also afflicted with hunger and thirst, their skin and flesh are all dried up, like a tree stump burned by fire, their faces are covered with hair. Because they are afflicted with hunger and thirst, their faces and mouths are very dry, like a tongue licking, so they run everywhere in springs, lakes, and ponds. However, in those places, there are also beings holding swords and other weapons guarding and blocking them. Those waters also appear as blood and pus, and they themselves do not want to drink them. Such are known as pretas with external obstructions to food and drink. Those with internal obstructions to food and drink are: their mouths are as small as the eye of a needle, burning with flames, having tumors, and huge swellings. Like this, even if they are not obstructed by others, and they themselves have found food and drink, they are unable to eat and drink. Those with obstructions to food and drink themselves are: there is one called the preta flame chain. Everything they eat and drink will burn, so their hunger and thirst will never disappear. There are also those called preta vile eaters. Some of them eat feces and drink urine, able to eat or drink anything that is unclean, foul-smelling, and disgusting. Some cut their own flesh to eat, but they are unable to eat or drink anything that is clean and edible. Such are those with obstructions to food and drink themselves. Therefore, beings born as humans suffer the pain of poverty.
