They experience suffering in them without interruption, and it is only by uttering cries of distress that they are revealed to be sentient beings. Furthermore, they are made to roll in iron filings together with burning iron flakes. Furthermore, they are forced to climb up and down a burning iron mountain. Furthermore, their tongues are pulled out, stretched out completely by being nailed with iron nails. Furthermore, they are laid supine on that very iron ground, and their mouths are opened with iron tongs, and then burning iron molten metal and boiling copper are poured in, which burns their mouths, burns their entrails and internal organs, and flows out from their lower body. The remaining parts are as hot as can be. They will experience suffering there for a long time, until their karma is exhausted. Therefore, that hell is called Avīci (མནར་མེད།, अवīचि, avici, without waves). These are just a few of the major harms mentioned, but it does not mean that there are no other kinds of harm in those hells. In the neighboring hells, beings will experience such suffering: in the four directions of those great hells, there are four walls and four doors, surrounded by iron fences, and in those four directions there are also four doors, with four additional hells at each of the outer doors. For example, there are burning ashes about knee-deep, and when those beings go to seek a place to stay, if they put their feet there, their skin, flesh, and blood will be destroyed, and when they lift their feet, they will grow back again. Connected to this is a mud of extremely foul-smelling rotting corpses and excrement, and those beings will sink into it, they will fall there, and their heads and feet will sink into it. There, life
