The hells are near the great sentient hells and the cold sentient hells, and there are no other special places. Some temporary sentient hells can even be seen among humans. Just as the Venerable Maudgalyāyana's son said: I saw sentient beings burning and intensely burning, spreading from all directions and intensely burning, becoming a single flame. It is like what was said. Thus, these thirty-six places are called the desire realm. There are eighteen places in the form realm, as follows: Through completely practicing the first dhyana, small, medium, and large, the Brahmas of the Brahma host, the Brahmas of the Brahma attendants, and the Great Brahmas are produced. Through completely practicing the second dhyana, small, medium, and large, the lesser light, immeasurable light, and clear light are produced. Through completely practicing the third dhyana, small, medium, and large, the lesser virtue, immeasurable virtue, and vast virtue are produced. Through completely practicing the fourth dhyana, small, medium, and large, the cloudless, merit-born, and great fruit are produced. The non-perceptual beings belong to the great fruit, so there are no other places. Through alternately completely practicing the fourth dhyana with outflows and without outflows, small, medium, large, very large, and extremely large, the five pure abodes are produced, namely the Non-Hot, Non-Afflicted, Good-Looking, Good-Seeing, and Akanishtha. Beyond the pure abodes, there is the Great自在天, which is where bodhisattvas abiding on the ten bhumis are born after completely practicing the ten bhumis. In the formless realm, there are four places. Furthermore, because there is no body, there are no other places. The measurement of the bodies of sentient beings is established as follows: The measurement of the bodies of humans in Jambudvipa is uncertain, sometimes large and sometimes small, about three and a half cubits of their own. The measurement of the bodies of the three continents, such as Eastern Videha, is certain, about three and a half cubits of their own. The body is very large. The Four Great Kings

The measurement of the gods of the Four Great Kings is one-fourth of a yojana. The measurement of the Thirty-three Gods is a little more than one-fourth of a yojana. The measurement of Indra is half a yojana. The measurement of the Gods Without Strife is also half a yojana. The classes of desire realm gods above that should be regarded as each higher one exceeding each lower one by one-fourth of a yojana. The measurement of the Brahma hosts is half a krosha. The measurement of the Brahmapurohitas is one krosha. The measurement of the Great Brahmas is one and a half kroshas. The measurement of the Lesser Light gods is two kroshas. Above that, each higher body should be regarded as twice the size of each lower one, except for the Cloudless, for whom three kroshas should be subtracted. The size of the bodies of the great hell beings is not fixed. Those who have committed and accumulated extremely great sins and unwholesome actions, their bodies become large, while the bodies of others change differently. Just as with the great hell beings, so it is with the cold hell beings, the solitary hells, the neighboring hell beings, as well as the pretas and animals. The bodies of the asuras should be understood as being established in the same way as the measurement of the Thirty-three Gods. For the formless ones, there is no measurement because they are formless. Now, the establishment of the measure of life is as follows: The people of Jambudvipa determine the measure of life by the method of thirty days to a month and twelve months to a year. Sometimes the measure of life becomes immeasurable, and sometimes it becomes eighty thousand years. Sometimes it decreases to ten years of life. The measure of life in the Eastern Continent and so forth is fixed: for the easterners it is two hundred and fifty years. For the westerners it is five hundred years. For the northerners it is one thousand years. What is fifty years for humans is one day and night for the Four Great Kings. Counting thirty days as a month and twelve months as a year, five hundred divine years is the lifespan that the gods of the Four Great Kings can live. What is one hundred years for humans is the Thirty-three
