As stated in the "Bodhicharyavatara". Fourth, if one possesses the adornment of speech, then the speaker's words will be extremely beautiful. That is, if one can well understand the meaning of the words and sentences of one's own and others' treatises, and if the phrasing is complete, then one can avoid the faults of speech that will be mentioned below, because there is no idle chatter, etc. Fearlessness means that when speaking in an assembly of many who are known as wise and monastic, there is no hesitation or fear. Steadiness means that after the opponent's words have come to an end, one speaks calmly and deliberately. Concordance means that due to one's good nature, one is able to be in accord with the minds of the judges and opponents. Fifth, to cut off with interrupted speech means that the speaker is penalized in some way, such as refuting the other's arguments, etc. Among these, refuting the other's arguments means admitting that one's own statements are incorrect and admitting that the other's statements are correct. Interrupted speech means that in the course of the debate, no final conclusion is reached, but it is interrupted by other topics or other means. Faults of speech refer to idle chatter and other such words. Confusion means being distracted by joy or anger. Unsuitable for expression means that it cannot be understood by the Dharma and meaning, retinue, and opponents. Inappropriate means superfluous, repetitive, and insufficient. Meaningless means that there is no necessary meaning, that it is separated from the meaning to be expressed, that it is separated from reason, that the argument and what is to be argued are the same, that it needs to be argued again, that it is not in accordance with the rules, that it is not suitable to be put together, and that it is ironic. Speaking out of time means that what should be said later is said earlier, and what should be said earlier is said later. Instability means abandoning after vowing, and vowing again after abandoning, etc., and becoming very impatient due to being too hasty, etc. Unclear means that it contradicts the rules of grammar, that one answers before the opponent has finished stating the refutation, that one starts with Sanskrit and ends with one's own language, etc. Disconnected speech means that in the middle, words and courage are paused and interrupted.

O. Sixth, what necessarily arises from speaking is not speaking after examining the faults and merits of speech. In this regard, the opponent is not a vessel, unable to elevate from a place of fault to a place of merit. The retinue has no merit, which means not understanding the distinctions of words and meanings, not being impartial, and so on. One should also recognize that one is not proficient in one's own and others' doctrines, and should not speak. One should speak in the opposite way of these three. Seventh, regarding the dharmas to be cherished in speaking, from two aspects, what is actually needed is what is inevitably needed by all who speak. In this regard, being proficient in one's own and others' doctrines enables one to speak in all situations of conversation. Fearlessness enables one to speak in all places renowned for wise and virtuous retinues. Eloquence enables one to know how to answer all questions. Admonishing those who wish for goodness not to argue means that those who wish for happiness in the ultimate moment should know the ways of speaking as shown before, and should not argue and speak with others, because most arguments do not become Dharma. The proof of this is the Bhagavan, and so on. Bodhisattvas listening and so on, striving for virtue, is also for the sake of knowing everything, not for the sake of fame and gain, and so on, so diligently striving, benefiting oneself and others, gathering beings, and so on. The twelve places are that the Great Vehicle, which possesses the supreme meaning of the sacred Dharma, is profound in nature, and even if it is spoken without argument, it is rare to explain it as it is and to know everything, let alone to explain it through argument. Those who speak through argument with whom, if they speak with the intention of knowing everything, are also rare, then speaking with the intention of finding fault, and the assembly of listeners, if there are also few who are wise and have the discernment to examine, then they are biased. Most of what is said has six faults, and few can abandon the six faults and speak. For example, sometimes one may accidentally fully accept and cling to bad aspects, abandon words and sentences, slander behind one's back, impose punishments, and so on, which are all bad and false words.
