Thus, in the compilation of detailed determinations: With regard to the individual, it belongs to the continuum of an ordinary being. In terms of birth, it first arises in this life, and thereafter in the form realm, in the fourth dhyana, it is experienced from the fruit. Thus it is explained. The aspect is based on the mind of the fourth dhyana, and perception is disease, boils, sores, and pain. Non-perception is the supreme peace, which is the aspect of refuting perception. Cessation attainment is also taught through five aspects: ground, attention, place, essence, and designation. Among these, the ground is: "Having abandoned attachment to the sphere of nothingness and transcended the peak of existence," which is the ground of the peak of existence. This also indicates that it possesses transcendental wisdom, because one who has not attained the mind of the peak of existence has not abandoned attachment to nothingness, and one who has not attained the transcendental path has not transcended the peak of existence. One who has attained the transcendental path has transcended the peak of existence, because they have destroyed all the view-to-be-abandoned and practice-to-be-abandoned of the peak of existence. It only mentions transcending the peak of existence, without saying whether or not they have abandoned attachment, because some arhats also enter this attainment, so it does not say that they have abandoned attachment. Also, some non-returners who have not abandoned attachment to the peak of existence also enter the attainment, so it does not say that they have abandoned attachment. Some ordinary beings who have attained the mind of the peak of existence, although they have abandoned attachment to nothingness, cannot enter this attainment, so it says transcending the peak of existence. Some noble ones, although they have transcended the peak of existence, cannot enter this attainment, so it says having abandoned attachment to the sphere of nothingness. Thus, these two phrases, "having abandoned attachment to the sphere of nothingness and transcended the peak of existence," indicate that the individual who enters cessation attainment must possess both special calm abiding and special insight in that order.

In this regard, the special quiescence meditation is the mind of the peak of existence, because it is the most excellent of all worldly abodes. The special insight meditation is the wisdom that transcends the world, because it abandons all the afflictions of the three realms. Why does entering into cessation require relying on the special quiescence meditation, the mind of the peak of existence? Because other minds have very clear experiences and perceptions, they are incompatible with cessation. But the peak of existence has unclear perceptions, so it is compatible with cessation and easy to achieve. Why does the special insight meditation need to rely on the wisdom that transcends the world? If one does not have the wisdom that realizes selflessness, one cannot prevent the mind with afflictions, accompanied by the fear of the doubt of self-annihilation. If that is not prevented, it will not become the supreme state of the noble ones who have completely prevented coarse consciousness and feelings. Therefore, the sutra says, "One who enters into cessation should cherish two dharmas: what are the two? Quiescence and insight." Following these words, these two terms are mentioned. Attention means that when the noble ones have completely arisen with coarse perceptions and feelings, they think, "I should abide in the supreme state of completely preventing coarse perceptions and feelings." Therefore, entering into this is not with the idea of liberation from cyclic existence, because in this, one enters into samadhi based on the mind of the peak of existence, and the peak of existence is also worldly, so one cannot be liberated from it, and the noble ones do not have inverted perceptions. Therefore, it is said, "with attention preceded by the consciousness of peaceful abiding." This is also in terms of the noble Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but Bodhisattvas enter into samadhi for the purpose of training the power of samadhi for the benefit of others, and for the purpose of showing others the power of samadhi that has already been trained, and so on. Buddhas, due to the power of the aspiration of previous prayers, enter into cessation and arise, etc., in order to tame sentient beings.

English
It is merely an appearance. The location is the mind and mental phenomena, the impermanent six consciousnesses and their retinues. These are, in the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm, respectively, six, four, and one, which are the objects of cessation. The ālaya-vijñāna arises without interruption for even a moment until the stage of no-more-learning and the stage of non-return are attained. The afflicted mind also arises in all contaminated activities except for these two stages, cessation, and entering the supramundane path. Therefore, these two are called stable. Among these stable phenomena, some are the afflicted mind and its retinue. In the samādhi of the no-more-learning and so on, there is no afflicted mind. The essence is the cessation of the seven consciousnesses and their retinues. The state of the body of the one who enters samādhi, having made the seven consciousnesses and their retinues not arise with the mind that enters samādhi, is what is designated as the samādhi of cessation, but it does not exist as a substance. In the Vibhajyavāda, as it is said that the ālaya-vijñāna of the mind in samādhi is designated as the state where the seeds are weakened, if the ālaya-vijñāna, which is the basis of designation, is not understood, then the samādhi of cessation designated upon it cannot be understood either. Therefore, statements such as "This bhikṣu has entered the samādhi of cessation" would be unreasonable in every way. Regarding this, if someone asks: What kind of person, in what realm, and in what state enters samādhi? Regarding the person, in the *Viniscaya-saṃgraha* it says: "Here, the learner who realizes the non-returner with the body, and the non-learner who is liberated from both, also enter samādhi." Thus it is said. The noble Bodhisattvas also enter samādhi. Regarding the realm, it also says in the same text: "From the perspective of arising, if the ālaya-vijñāna is not distinguished, then it first arises here and manifests in the form realm, because manifestation depends on form. If the ālaya-vijñāna is distinguished, then it should be seen that manifestation goes everywhere." Thus it is said, the unborn arises.
