So, is this "is" also conceptualization? It should be understood in connection with the previous statement. Yes, it is conceptualization. But there are things that are not thought and examination. Those are the minds and mental factors of the three realms (desire realm, form realm, formless realm) other than these two. There are also things that are neither of these two. Those are the supramundane wisdoms. The objects of these thoughts and examinations are the collections of names, sentences, and letters, and the meanings they express. Their divisions are seven, namely: with characteristics, without characteristics, arising spontaneously, seekers, individually thinking, afflicted, and non-afflicted conceptualizations. The first is the conceptualization of past meanings, and the conceptualization of being skilled in terminology. The second is the thought of the future, and the thought of not being skilled in terminology. The third is the thought of the present object. The fourth is the state of seeking and examining the essence and characteristics of all phenomena. The fifth is the state of individually thinking and examining the same thing. The sixth is the thoughts that are in accordance with afflictions and near afflictions. The seventh is the conceptualization that is in accordance with good dharmas such as faith, and that is in accordance with the unobscured and unspecified dharmas. The function of thought and examination is that, being in accordance with pleasant things, it becomes the basis for abiding in the touch of happiness; being in accordance with unpleasant things, it has the function of not becoming the basis for abiding in the touch of happiness. Another function of good and affliction is that the function of good dharmas such as faith is not only what was said before, but also has the function of abandoning aspects that do not agree with oneself, such as disbelief. The function of afflictions such as desire and near afflictions such as anger is to prevent the arising of antidotes that are contrary to oneself, such as non-attachment and love that counteract desire. The aggregate of formations that are in accordance with the mind has been extensively explained. Now, since there are still formations that are not in accordance with the mind left, therefore wanting to explain it, it is said that the formations that are not in accordance with the mind.

What are the formations (Sanskrit: saṃskāra)? Someone asked. Whatever dharma, whether it is form, mind, or mental factors, is attributed to a state, and from the perspective of the basis of the state, it cannot be precisely pointed out as being different from the basis of the state itself or anything else. Therefore, it cannot be indicated as "this is it" through reasoning, but can only be understood through conventional terms. This is called non-associated formations. This is not a truly existent entity, because it cannot be established by self-awareness like mind and mental factors, nor can it be perceived by the senses like form, sound, etc., nor can it be inferred from the result like the sense organs such as the eye. If it is said that it is none other than form, mind, and mental factors, then what is the state of form is form, and what is the state of mind and mental factors is also mind and mental factors. Thinking that the state and the basis of the state are the same is not good, because if the states that depend on multiple bases of states also become multiple, then the states that depend on one basis of state will also become one. For example, when a flock of birds is lined up, we call it "a string of birds." If the state and the basis of the state are the same, then just as there are multiple bases of the state, the state string of birds will also become multiple, and each bird will be considered a string of birds, because they are each the same as the state string of birds. Furthermore, the same bead is placed in the ones place and represents the number "one." Similarly, when placed in the tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. places, it also produces the corresponding numerical concept. If the state and the basis of the state are the same, then just as the basis of the state bead is one, the state one, ten, etc. numbers will also become the same, which is too much. Therefore, the dharmas attributed to the state, such as strings and numbers, are not the same as the basis of the state. This has been well established. If these are completely the same as their basis of state, then they do not exist even in conventional terms. For example, the same bead in the ones place
