Being overwhelmed by power, whether one has done a virtuous deed or a non-virtuous evil deed, if one thinks, "Why did I do such a bad thing?" and thereby generates regret in the mind, this is displeasure and discomfort. Such discomfort arises from the mind accompanied by (emotions). Among them, afflictions belong to the category of ignorance, while virtue and neutrality belong to the category of bodhisattvas and wisdom. A bad deed is regret, and the displeasure arising from focusing on it is called regret from the perspective of the object. Isn't virtue a non-bad deed? Why does regret arise from focusing on it? Because if someone is displeased with what they have done, that thing is a bad deed for them. Otherwise, how could one be displeased with what one has done? Regretting not doing good deeds and doing bad deeds is virtue. The opposite of this is non-virtue. Regretting doing or not doing trivial matters such as crafts and conduct is neutral. It is timely while one is doing something, because it can still be remedied. It is not timely after the thing is completely done, because it cannot be remedied. Then, if one commits a transgression and then acts according to the Dharma, can't it be remedied? That is only liberation from the offense, not a वापस (Sanskrit, Roman transliteration: vāpas, literal meaning: return) of the deed that has already been done. Regretting what should be regretted is reasonable; regretting what should not be regretted is unreasonable. The phrase "obstructing the abiding of the mind" refers to afflictions. It is unreasonable for the commentary to explain it this way, because whether it is virtue or affliction, those who possess this characteristic cannot focus their mind even slightly on the object, because the mind is constantly agitated and distracted by the influence of discomfort. For example, when King Ajatashatru regretted committing the five heinous crimes, his mind could not be calmed until he had eliminated that regret. Therefore, this should be the function of all (emotions). The nature of discrimination is to focus on the differences in the nature of persons and phenomena, relying on the thought or wisdom that gives rise to all speech.

Because one universally seeks what this form is, it evokes speech from all aspects, hence it is the expression of mind. Because it is a coarse form, it is called coarse mind. The body of action is also the previously mentioned vigor and wisdom. The object is the very nature and difference of the individual and dharma fabricated by conceptualization. The form is the expression of mind with the aspect of distinguishing and measuring separately with the form of certainty that "this is this." Because it is a subtle form relative to conceptualization, it is called subtle mind. For the minds that possess these, respectively called coarse mind and subtle mind, the nature of these is not the nature of coarse and subtle mind, because they would become non-mental factors. Therefore, it is also unreasonable to say in the Vibhāṣā, "Sometimes, on mind and mental factors, it is established as conceptualization." Because the bodies of both conceptualization and analysis are said in the scriptures to be mental factors and wisdom. As it is said in the Yogācārabhūmi, "What is the body of conceptualization and analysis? Conceptualization and analysis that do not manifestly conceptualize the object are the body of mental factors. Conceptualization and analysis that manifestly conceptualize the object should be known as the body of wisdom." Thus it is said. These two, conceptualization and analysis, because their forms are contradictory, cannot arise simultaneously in the retinue of the same mind, but first arises conceptualization with the form of seeking, and then arises analysis with the form of certainty. Therefore, analysis is preceded by conceptualization. Among them, the mind consciousness that corresponds to conceptualization is called the seeker. That which corresponds to analysis is called the determiner. Furthermore, the conceptualization that is famous among conceptualizations, as it is said, "Whatever consciousness grasps sound and meaning, that is conceptualization for it," has the nature of grasping sound and meaning mixed together. It pervades both conceptualization and analysis mentioned here, as well as all forms of conceptualization and measurement such as pride. The determination of conceptualization and analysis mentioned here is as follows: Whatever is conceptualization and analy
