It is for the sake of gathering together in common. The meaning of the sources of arising is that, through the gateway of location and object, the various consciousnesses arise and become the gateway of growth, therefore it is called the sources of arising. Also, it is the meaning of the seed of all dharmas, and it also becomes the meaning of gathering and holding all aspects of dharmas. As explained in the commentary. Now, in order to explain the meaning of the examples that illustrate the selflessness of the aggregates, let us first cite a sutra. The sutra says: For example, when a person with eyes sees some water bubbles being blown by the wind, when he examines them properly, he finds that they are empty, loose, hollow, and without essence. Similarly, when a noble disciple who is a hearer examines the form properly, it appears to be empty and without essence. Similarly, the feeling and so on are explained by using water bubbles as an example. The condensed meaning of these is that form is like a water bubble and so on. The explanation of the meaning of the sutra is, for what reason should form be likened to a water bubble and so on? Just as when one examines water bubbles and so on properly, one finds that they are empty, loose, hollow, and without essence, similarly, when one examines form and so on properly with wisdom, they appear to be empty due to the selflessness of sentient beings, and they appear to be loose due to decay and afflictions, and they appear to be hollow due to the smallness of the taste to be experienced, and they appear to be without essence because their own nature is unstable and they are separated from the support of permanent things. In this way, each example of water bubbles and so on also shows that all five aggregates are selfless and so on. Therefore, this treatise should be recited in this way: Form is selfless like a water bubble, because it is impermanent and without essence. Similarly, the remaining aggregates should also be applied in the same way. The four aggregates, such as feeling, should also be applied and explained in the same way. Or, form is impure like a water bubble. Like a water bubble, the taste of happiness is very small. Like a mirage moved by the wind in the sunlight, it is unstable. Like a banana tree, it has no

are emptiness itself. Like illusions, sentient beings are without self. Combine them in this way. Similarly, combine them with the other four aggregates, such as feeling. In another way, form is like a mass of foam, without bondage. Feeling is like a water bubble, with little taste. Perception is like a mirage, unstable. Formations are like plantain trees, without essence. Consciousness is like an illusion, without self. Thus, it should be explained. Among these, according to the first explanation, each example can counteract all four inversions of the five aggregates. According to the second explanation, each example can counteract each aspect of the inversions of the five aggregates. According to the third explanation, each example can only counteract one aspect of inversion for each aggregate. In the Sutra of the Collection of Righteous Dharmas and others, it is said that the elements are like poisonous snakes, and the sources are like empty villages, separately contemplating and establishing that metaphors are also spoken for these two dharmas. Thus, having extensively explained the characteristics of the aggregates, elements, and sources, in order to generate wisdom in the disciples again, wanting to explain their vast distinctions, the question is asked: What are the various distinctions of the aggregates, elements, and sources? There are four: division into sixty types such as existent substance, division into three types such as completely imputed, division into four types such as characteristics, and division into six types such as external appearance. The first also has to be understood through three aspects: a summary statement of the meaning, a detailed explanation, and an exposition of immeasurable distinctions consistent with it. First, if we summarize the meaning and the aspects of the words of the great distinctions that are to be explained, how many are there? It should be known that the objects to be known range from existent substance, etc., to conditions, etc., and each of these should be determined by three aspects: the meaning to be known, the nature or essence of how many aspects there are, and why it is needed. Second, there are seven detailed explanations of these, namely: four such as existent substance, three such as knowledge, and six such as form.
