One who abides in the fruit of the ascetic path, distinguished by the abandonment of the three bonds. The three bonds are: belief in a self, adherence to ethics and rituals, and doubt. Why is it that by abandoning these one is established in the stream-enterer stage? Because these three are the main objects to be abandoned by a stream-enterer, as they are the primary obstacles to entering the path to nirvana. Thus, belief in a self grasps the aggregates as self, thereby delighting in samsara and becoming the cause of not being liberated from suffering; adherence to ethics and rituals clings to wrong paths, so even if one strives, one will go astray, becoming the cause of not being liberated; doubt causes hesitation about the right path, becoming the cause of not being truly liberated. For example, not wanting to go, or wanting to go but relying on the wrong path, or doubting the right path, these are all obstacles to reaching the destination. As it is said: Not wanting to go and the wrong path, And doubt on the path, The obstacle to traversing liberation, Therefore, these three are taught. So, why is it called stream-enterer? Because from the obstacle of liberation, and the second (referring to adherence to ethics and rituals and doubt), one enters the stream of nirvana. The classification of the second is: faith-follower and dharma-follower. The first is: the follower of previous faith, at the time of abiding in the fruit, due to the increase of faith, is distinguished by greater faith, therefore it is called faith-follower. The second is: the follower of previous dharma, at the time of the fruit, due to the increase of wisdom, is distinguished by seeing, therefore it is called that. Distinguished by effort, there are two types: those who merely abide in the fruit and those who have special qualities. The first is the one who abides in the fruit and does not strive on the path for the sake of the fruit with special qualities. The second is the opposite of that. These two distinguished by faculty and effort, should be viewed in the same way for the two intermediate fruits as well. If distinguished by the difference of birth, then there are seven more lives, and family to family. The first has three characteristics: the characteristic of abandonment is that the abandonment of the desire realm's objects of meditation has not been completely abandoned; the characteristic of the fruit is that it abides in the fruit itself; the characteristic of birth is that desire

Taking seven rebirths in gods and humans, and in the seventh manifesting the end of suffering. Just like that, not only abandoning the meditative abandonments at the fruition stage, but also having obtained seven times like that. Regarding this, the Vaibhāṣikas consider that, as they believe, there are seven intermediate existences of rebirth as humans, seven intermediate existences, and seven intermediate existences of rebirth as desire realm gods. Although twenty-eight rebirths are to be taken, it is called seven times because they are similar in groups of seven. For example, like seven leaves and a monk skilled in the seven abodes. The Sautrāntikas say: The sūtra says that it is impossible for a person with perfect view to accomplish eight existences. And it is generally said that there are seven times among gods and humans, so this refers to the human race. There is much to be said about this, so let it be put aside for now. Second, there are also three differences in rebirth from lineage to lineage. The difference in abandonment is: having abandoned three or four of the meditative abandonments of the desire realm, and not having abandoned the fifth. The difference in rebirth is: in any of the desire realm gods or humans, having taken two or three similar rebirths and attained nirvāṇa. The difference in antidote is: obtaining the antidote to those abandonments—the undefiled faculty. Just like that, liberated from three or four kinds, from lineage to lineage in two or three lifetimes. Just like that. Regarding this, the third affliction of the desire realm must be abandoned, otherwise, because the great affliction of the desire realm remains, the accomplishment of the fourth and other rebirths will not be prevented, therefore the difference in rebirth will not be accomplished. Like that, for those who have not abandoned the great affliction of the desire realm, there is the ability to accomplish up to seven similar rebirths, for example, like obtaining seven existences like that. For those who have not abandoned the medium, there is the ability to accomplish more than three, like rebirth from lineage to lineage. For those who have not abandoned the small, there is the ability to accomplish one rebirth, like a once-returner. Therefore, if the three great afflictions of the desire realm are not abandoned, the difference in rebirth will not be accomplished. The fourth can be abandoned or not abandoned. The fifth must be something that has not been abandoned before and will never be abandoned in that lifetime, if it is abandoned, the sixth will undoubtedly be abandoned as well, therefore it will become a once-returner. The difference in rebirth can then be accomplished.
