Among the three, extensive, intermediate, and concise. If it is taught in that way, it is for that reason. Third, if it is taught among the three, extensive, intermediate, and concise, if someone asks: Should the sources of all three be written completely? Answer: Although in the fundamental scriptures of the treatises, regarding the purpose of generating the mind of enlightenment, which is bodhi and benefiting others, all the extensive, intermediate, and concise contents have been taught, in this commentary, the source itself is not written, but because it is desired to explain it concisely, it is feared that there will be too many words. The second part is divided into three points, the first point is: It is not an ordinary sentence, but a combination of additional meaning in the form of verses, which is called an intermediate verse. Here, it is only the essence of the mind of enlightenment, not a detailed classification, so it is an ordinary sentence. The distinction is: It is only mentioned incidentally, so it is called an intermediate word. The second part is divided into two meanings, common and branch, the first meaning is divided into three types: number, definite order, and the debate on whether the mind of enlightenment exists in the Buddha-land, the first is: These twenty-two are summarized from the ground of the initial practitioner to the ground of the Buddha, so there is no need for more, and if there are fewer, they are not included, so the number is definite. The second is: These previous and subsequent ones are mostly cause and effect, so it is the order of meaning. As it is said in the Great Commentary: Therefore, distinguishing the order of understanding the meaning from the order as stated, these are the ones, neither superfluous nor missing, nor should they be taught in any other order. The third is: Some say: Here, the last three minds of enlightenment are placed on the Buddha-land, so the mind of enlightenment exists on the Buddha-land. This is unreasonable, because there should not be any aspiration or action on the Buddha-land, and apart from aspiration and action, no scripture has taught the mind of enlightenment with characteristics. If there is the nature of aspiration and action, then because there is the act of practicing the path, and there is the expectation of the result, the act will not be completely fulfilled. Here, placing the last three on the Buddha-land is in terms of the result of the mind of enlightenment, not the actual mind of enlightenment, because there are twenty-two minds of enlightenment.

The establishment from the ground of an ordinary person to the ground of a Buddha is because the distinctions of all causes and effects have been excellently made. As it is said in the Great Commentary: "This must be understood as the distinction between an ordinary Bodhisattva and a Tathagata, which is a distinction possessing the nature of cause and effect." As it is also said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The arising of the mind is in the grounds." etc., is cited as evidence. Otherwise, merely distinguishing from the perspective of cause would not complete all the distinctions, and therefore the distinction would not be completely perfect, which is the view of some. The noble ones and others place the last eight mind-arisings on the path of distinction of the ten grounds. In the Great Commentary, it says: "Others say that the eighth mind-arising, similar to a great king, etc., is gathered by the path of distinction from the Bodhisattva ground." In the Sunlight Commentary, it says: "The single progression is because the Bodhisattvas belonging to that ground are not different in doing things for the sake of others." Thus, the twenty-first Bodhisattva ground is explained. Secondly, the mind-arising that has the characteristic of "mind-arising is for the sake of others," if distinguished, also has twenty-two aspects. Thus, it is connected. What are those? They are "earth, gold, moon, fire," and so on. Thirdly, there is a detailed explanation in the commentary. The first of the two summarizing meanings is: the meaning to be expressed, the metaphor that expresses it, and the three that are consistent with the meaning of the metaphor must be determined. That which is mainly the desire for enlightenment is called the mind-arising with desire, which is like the earth, because it is the basis of the origin of all white dharmas, the Buddha's dharma, and all its retinues. The sutra is like the outline of enlightenment as stated in the sutra. That which is mainly the intention to accomplish the happiness of the six perfections is called having intention, which is like good gold, because it will never change until enlightenment is attained. The sutra is like the extensive explanation of enlightenment as stated in the sutra. That which is mainly the superior intention to meditate on the four mindfulnesses, etc., is called having superior intention, which is like the waxing crescent moon, because the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, etc., are virtuous.
