Having abandoned the two extremes, in short, the very nature of consciousness-only is suitable as the Middle Way. So, what is the extreme of superimposition? And what is the extreme of denigration? Those who are outside of this Dharma manifestly cling to a self that is either one with or different from the aggregates; and those within this Dharma, the Vaibhashikas and Sutrantikas, manifestly cling to the nature of the apprehended and the apprehender as Dharma. These have fallen into the extreme of superimposition. To abandon that, it is said: There is no imputation of self and phenomena. Clinging to the eater is an imputation of self. Clinging to the apprehended, the apprehender, the permanent, and the impermanent is an imputation of phenomena. These are merely complete fabrications, because they do not exist as they are imputed. Some who assert the absence of inherent existence say that consciousness is merely conventional and does not truly exist. These are understood to have fallen into the extreme of denigration. To abandon that, it is said: There is untrue complete fabrication. The minds and mental factors of the three realms are called untrue complete fabrication, because due to the power of habit, they appear as other than their true nature. These are definitely existent as entities because they are experienced by self-awareness. If that is the case, then since objects are also established by sense perception, shouldn't there also be an apprehended and an apprehender? No, because those that appear as objects, such as forms, are deceptive, like the consciousness of a dream. By what can it be proven that self-awareness is not deceptive? If objects and subjects are different, then it is reasonable for them to be mutually deceptive. But for self-awareness, if there is no difference between object and subject, then what would be deceptive about it? It is not reasonable for oneself to be deceptive to oneself, because there is nothing that can exist apart from its own nature. What is the meaning of abandoning the extremes of superimposition and denigration? It is said: Abandoning the extremes of permanence and annihilation, this mode of consciousness is the Middle Way. This untrue complete fabrication, because it does not exist as the self and phenomena as fabricated by children, is free from the extreme of permanence. Experiencing

Since its nature has never existed, it avoids the extreme of annihilation. Thus, this is the Middle Way. Having explained it briefly in this way, now it should be elaborated. First, in order to avoid the extreme of clinging to self, it is said: 'The aggregates are not self, nor are they mine. There is no self in them, nor am I the place where the aggregates exist. Therefore, accumulate the discriminations of self and what belongs to self.' All views about self are to discriminate the five aggregates of appropriation in four ways: that is, thinking that the aggregates are self, or that they are mine, or that I possess the aggregates, or that I exist in the aggregates. Through the distinctions of the five aggregates, it leads to twenty views of the collection of destructible things. That is, form is self, form is mine, I possess form, and I exist in form, and so on up to consciousness. Therefore, it is said in the sutra: 'The twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the collection of destructible things are destroyed by the vajra of wisdom.' Therefore, the aggregates are not self, because they do not agree with the characteristics of self. For example, the aggregates are thought to be impermanent and diverse, while self is clung to as permanent and singular. Things with inconsistent characteristics cannot be one, because they contradict each other. Therefore, there is no self that is one with the aggregates. The aggregates are also not mine to be controlled at will, because even if I do not want them to, the aggregates will change, decay, and so on. Whatever is blessed by something can be used at will, like a potter making a pot. The aggregates do not follow my wishes, so they should not be blessed by me. It is also not reasonable for me to possess the aggregates, because if I am permanent, then the aggregates that depend on me will never decay, and also because if I and the aggregates could be distinguished like Devadatta and ornaments, but they are not actually distinguished. Nor does the self exist in the aggregates, because...
