Commentary on the Ornament of Clear Realization Commentary on the Ornament of Clear Realization Here begins the text of the Commentary on the Ornament of Clear Realization. I prostrate to all Buddhas of the ten directions and their retinues! In order to accord with the conduct of the noble ones, at the beginning of composing a treatise, I begin with a prostration that expresses the extraordinary qualities of my own teacher: By nature pure, without stain, free from attachment, unobstructed, wisdom increasing, effortlessly accomplishing good deeds, to that Sage I bow with my head. Thus it is said. This verse expresses the manner of bowing to the Bhagavan with the most revered part of the body, the head, out of extreme respect, through the three aspects of abandonment, realization, and activity. So, what kind of qualities does the Bhagavan possess? And why should one prostrate to him? Because he possesses the excellent qualities of abandonment and realization for his own benefit, and the qualities of activity for the benefit of others. Anyone who possesses the qualities of both benefits is able to place others in the supreme state that he himself has attained, therefore, we prostrate to the teacher who possesses such qualities. Among these, the qualities of abandonment are of two types: purity by nature and purity from defilement. The first is: the mind is luminous by nature, because from the beginning, the mind has not existed as the nature of defilement, but exists as an extremely luminous nature. The second is: the mind itself has not been defiled by other factors such as attachment, because through the wisdom of the antidote, even the habitual tendencies of the two obscurations have been completely eradicated. This also possesses three characteristics: namely, well abandoned, irreversibly abandoned, and completely abandoned. First, what is abandoned no longer becomes the source of suffering in samsara, because it is achieved through realizing the antidote to samsara—selflessness. This shows that it surpasses the abandonment of the non-Buddhists, because their abandonment is achieved through worldly paths that have the aspect of quiescence and violence, which are the cause of being born into higher realms. Second, irreversibly abandoned means that the faults that have been abandoned will not
