Because it possesses distinctions of shape, like palaces and so forth, the special agent is Ishvara. So they say. Secondly, explaining the tenets of the Vaiśeṣika school: The great sage Kaṇāda composed the treatises of the Vaiśeṣika school. They are also called the Kaṇāda. Because they say Brahmā is a god, they are also called the Brahma school. Because they hold the guise of an owl, they are known as disciples of the owl, and are also called the owlets. They assert that all knowable things are included in six categories, such as substance. Among these, substance is of nine kinds: self, time, direction, space, mind, earth, water, fire, and wind, which are the substances of the four elements. The substances of the four elements are also of two kinds: permanent and impermanent substances. The first are the atoms of the four elements. The second are the substances with parts composed of these. The definition of self: It is the basis of all qualities such as desire and hatred, pervades all, therefore encompasses all, is the agent and the enjoyer of karmic results, and is considered not to be mind itself, but to possess the qualities of mind. In the Madhyamaka-tattvasamgraha, it is said: Others also here are the self, being the basis of desire and so forth, likewise being permanent and all-pervading, considering oneself to be of a mindless nature. So it is said. That self, because it is mindless, is inanimate, is permanent, pervades all seeds, has no actions such as coming and going, and is considered to be the agent of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. Time, direction, and space are also, like the self, considered to be mindless, permanent, all-pervading, and without action. Among these, time is the cause of the arising of temporal aspects such as long and short durations, and direction is considered to be the cause of the arising of spatial aspects such as east and so forth. Mind is permanent, only the size of an atom. When it enters the doorways of the senses such as the ear, it generates the consciousness of that particular sense. So they say. Qualities are twenty-five in number, namely: the five kinds of intelligence of the senses such as the eye, the two of pleasure and pain, attachment and hatred, dharma and non-dharma, the conditioned, and the force of effort. Among these, thirteen are the qualities of the self. Some say that the latter two are the qualities of mind. Those qualities, the self...

As long as the concept of 'I' exists, I will continue to be in samsara. When one meditates on the powers and possessions as suffering, one becomes detached from them and no longer accepts them. When merits are no longer associated with 'I', it is called liberation. As it is said in the Madhyamaka-hrdaya: 'Cutting off the qualities of wisdom and so on that belong to 'I', the yogi who uproots them, if the thought of 'I' remains in the mind, know that it is the liberation of the Vaisheshikas.' Thus it is said. Numbers such as one and two, sizes such as large and small, lengths such as long and short, the individual that distinguishes things from each other, the contact where things touch each other, the separation where contact breaks, and non-difference, although said to be qualities of direction and time, are also qualities of other things, not necessarily limited to those two. The five objects of sense, such as form, are qualities of the five elements: form is a quality of fire, sound is a quality of space, smell is a quality of earth, taste is a quality of water, and touch is a quality of wind. The feeling of pleasure and pain is considered to be the mind's consciousness that corresponds to things that are the same as 'I' and meaning, and it is the inner mind that becomes the object of cognition by other things. Flames rising upwards, water flowing downwards, and so on, are said to be caused by karma and non-karma. Karma is lifting, placing, stretching, contracting, walking, and so on, which are meanings different from things. There are two kinds of generality: supreme generality and limited generality. The first is called 'existence itself,' which is permanent and singular, pervading substance, quality, and action, and is manifestly apparent. That is the generality that is distinct from particularity. Limited generality includes substance itself, action itself, quality itself, and so on. These are both generality and particularity. What is solely particular is the limit that applies to permanent substances, which are the atoms of the four elements, the liberated self, and that which exists only in the mind, and is solely the realm of yogis. The combination of sense organs, objects, qualities, and those possessing qualities is considered to be a relationship of aggregation. Some among the Vaisheshikas believe that Ishvara is the creator. They say that when Ishvara desires to create the world, Ishvara, with wisdom as the forerunner, causes the permanent atoms of the four elements to gather together, thus forming the mandalas of wind, earth, water, and fire.
