There is no difference in time. Thus, no matter how many moments are connected, time will not become long. Therefore, because there is no one, there is also no many, because many are preceded by the accumulation of one. Because atoms and moments have parts, there is no one, and therefore the accumulated many do not exist. So it is said. Similarly, in the Ornament of the Middle Way, it is said: These things claimed by self and other, in that very thing, because they are devoid of the nature of one and many, they are without nature, like an image. So it is said. Moreover, all things do not arise ultimately, because ultimately, they are free from the four extremes of arising from self, other, both, and without cause. This is the Vajra Splinter Examining Causes. So it is said. Similarly, in the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, it is said: Not from self, not from other, not from both, nor from no cause. Whatever things, in whatever place, there is never any arising. So it is said. The thesis is established: it does not arise from itself, because it is contradictory for itself to act on itself. For example, just as a finger cannot touch itself. It also does not arise from other, because there is no arising from causes that are destroyed or not destroyed. Because what is destroyed does not exist as a substance, and if it arises from what is not destroyed, it would lead to cause and effect being simultaneous. Because there are the two faults mentioned above, it does not arise from both self and other, and it does not arise from no cause, because it would lead to being either always existent or never existent. Moreover, all things do not arise ultimately, because whether there is a result or no result, it is empty of arising. The thesis is established: if there is a result, it contradicts arising, because what is established does not depend on others. Non-existence cannot produce non-existent things, because the function of cause does not apply to non-existence. So it is said. Similarly, in the Two Truths, it is said: Because the existent exists, it does not arise; because the non-existent does not exist, it does not arise. So it is said. Moreover, all things are without inherent existence, because they are interdependent, like an illusion, this is the sign of interdependence. The reason why pervasion exists is that, conditioned by ignorance, formations arise, because the root of the twelve links of interdependence is said to be ignorance, therefore all things are deceptive appearances and by nature

It is emptiness. The Svatantrika-Madhyamikas assert that things are established as devoid of inherent existence through these four great reasonings. This is the explanation of the fourth chapter, which distinguishes the tenets of self and others, from the 'Compendium of All Scriptures'.
