The twenty secondary defilements are the twenty from "anger" to "non-mindfulness." Because they bring the mind close to defilement, they are called secondary defilements. Among them, anger is thinking of immediately striking with weapons, etc., or harming with punishments, etc., when a harmer is nearby. Holding a grudge is not forgetting the harm done in the past, holding onto it, and wanting to retaliate. Both of these belong to the category of anger. Concealing is hiding and concealing from others the transgressions, such as downfalls, that have been committed. This belongs to the category of ignorance. Annoyance is constantly scolding and uttering harsh, rough words due to the power of constant mental torment. Jealousy is being unable to bear in mind the prosperity of others' retinues, enjoyments, etc., and being disturbed from within. These two also belong to the category of hatred. Stinginess is clinging to possessions and being incompatible with giving, belonging to the category of desire. Deceit is constantly showing deceptive behavior of body and speech with the intention of deceiving and enticing others. Cunning is the deceitful and crooked mind that hides one's faults when others mention them, by concealing them with windy words, etc. These two also belong to the category of desire and ignorance. Pride is the defiled joy of attachment to one's own wealth, such as body and enjoyments, based on being free from illness and being in the prime of youth, etc. This belongs to the category of desire. Harm is harming and bullying other sentient beings by binding, beating, etc., without compassion. This belongs to the category of anger. Shamelessness and recklessness are the opposite of the previously mentioned shame and respect, respectively, meaning not being ashamed of oneself and not being ashamed of others for unwholesome actions. These two belong to the category of the three poisons. Drowsiness is the lack of clarity of awareness of the object, which makes the mind unusable for virtuous actions and makes it dull. This belongs to the category of ignorance. Excitement is remembering past excitements and playfulness

Because from there, attachment arises towards objects, causing the mind to be unable to find peace. This belongs to the category of desire. Non-belief is the lack of faith in karma, truth, etc., and is the opposite of faith. Laziness is attachment to the pleasure of sleeping and ease, causing the mind to not rejoice in virtuous actions. These two belong to the category of ignorance. Carelessness is the failure to guard against contaminated dharmas, allowing oneself to be unrestrained, and is the opposite of mindfulness. This belongs to all three poisons. Forgetfulness is the repeated forgetting of the objects of afflictions, and is an afflicted form of mindfulness. Distraction is the mind's attachment to any of the objects of the three poisons. This also belongs to all three poisons. Non-discernment is the lack of understanding of what should and should not be done, associated with ignorance, and is the afflicted wisdom that causes one to act without understanding the actions of body and speech. The four changeable factors are: regret, sleep, investigation, and analysis. These four are called changeable because they can transform into virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral states depending on the influence of friends. Regret is the feeling of remorse in the mind for having done or not done something that should or should not have been done. Sleep is a mental factor that arises from causes such as undigested food, causing the six entering consciousnesses to involuntarily withdraw inward. These two, if afflicted, belong to the category of ignorance; if virtuous or neutral, they belong to the category of attention or wisdom. Investigation is the mental activity of generally searching for "what is this?" with respect to a person or the nature and distinctions of a dharma, and is a coarse mental state. Analysis is the mental activity of specifically distinguishing with certainty "this is this" with respect to the meaning investigated by investigation, and is a subtle mental state. These two, when the mind does not explicitly investigate an object, belong to attention; when the mind explicitly investigates, they belong to the category of wisdom. Third, the fourteen non-associated compositional factors, from attainment to the collection of names, sentences, and letters. Among them, attainment is: virtuous
