Even if any one of them is missing, the function of consciousness in cognizing objects will not be complete. Among them, contact is the aggregation of object, faculty, and consciousness as cause and effect, and it is the co-emergent mental factor that can completely sever the appearance of the object being pleasing or displeasing. Attention is the function of the mind, it is the co-emergent mental factor that makes the mind focus on the object. Intention is the co-emergent mental factor that obviously constructs and moves the mind when it tends towards objects that are virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral. Feeling and discrimination have already been explained. The five object-determinants are: aspiration, conviction, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom, which is the aspect of knowledge. They are called "specific determinants" because they engage with specific objects. Among them, aspiration is the co-emergent mental factor that desires the object of thought and strives to achieve it. This does not engage with what is not desired, therefore it is an object-determinant. Conviction is the co-emergent mental factor that firmly grasps the meaning that one has previously gained certainty about through scripture and reasoning, thinking, "This is just like this, it will not be otherwise." Because it does not engage with what is uncertain, it is an object-determinant. Mindfulness is the repeated recollection, without forgetting, of things that one has previously been familiar with and experienced, through the expression of thought. This also does not engage with what is unfamiliar, therefore it is an object-determinant. Concentration is the one-pointedness of mind that focuses the mind-stream on the object to be examined, such as quiescence and insight, and the four truths. Wisdom is the wisdom that individually distinguishes all the self-characteristics and general characteristics of the object to be examined. Both of these engage with the object to be examined, therefore they are object-determinants. The eleven virtuous mental factors are: faith, shame, embarrassment, non-attachment, non-hatred, non-ignorance, pliancy, conscientiousness, diligence, equanimity, and non-harmfulness. Among them, faith is trusting in karma and its effects, and the four truths, and is the faith of trust. Rejoicing in those who have qualities such as the Three Jewels is the faith of joy. Aspiring for cessation and the path is the faith of aspiration. Because one possesses such qualities as lineage and knowledge, one will abandon misdeeds.

Feeling that it is not right, one feels ashamed of bad deeds, which is knowing shame; feeling that it is not good if one's evil deeds are known by others, one feels ashamed towards others for bad deeds, which is having a sense of shame. Not being greedy for and not accepting the enjoyment of body, food, clothing, etc., and having no universal intention to harm other sentient beings, this is the nature of loving-kindness. Knowing the nature of all things as they are through the wisdom of birth, hearing, and contemplation, these three are, in order, non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance. Diligence is the joy of body, speech, and mind in virtuous deeds. Extreme pliancy is making the body and mind usable for virtuous actions. Mindfulness is guarding the mind against all disturbing emotions, cultivating and perfecting worldly and transcendental virtues. Equanimity is when the mind is placed in meditative absorption, it is not defiled by sinking or excitement, but naturally abides in equality. Non-harming is not offending others with body and speech, and not doing harm, which is part of non-hatred. These eleven are like good medicine, because their nature is born as a pure essence, so they are the goodness of essence. The six afflictions are: desire, anger, ignorance, pride, doubt, and views. Based on these six, secondary afflictions arise, so they are called root afflictions. The nature of views is defiled wisdom, and it is divided into five types based on the difference of object and aspect, namely the view of the aggregates of existence, etc. Among them, desire is attachment and clinging to the aggregates of the three realms' bodies and the things needed for enjoyment. Anger is universally harming sentient beings who are the source of suffering, as well as non-sentient beings such as poison and weapons, and thinking of harming them. Ignorance is not knowing the nature of all phenomena of aggregates, elements, and sources, and being deluded about self and what belongs to self. The view of the aggregates of existence is wisdom, so its aspect is clear, while this is the nature of unclear discrimination, so it is different. Pride is
