Without interruption, one can directly realize the path and attain Nirvana. These three are those with karma to be experienced after birth, and whose faculties and afflictions are of a middling degree. These, having abandoned afflictions, are not without remainder because they do not die until their lifespan is exhausted, hence they are not without remainder. Fifth, upward transference, which has two aspects: first, the difference in alternating cultivation as the cause, and second, an examination of where the result is obtained. First, a non-returner who is born in the form realm, passing through Akanistha, or who is able to attain Nirvana in the support of the peak of existence, is called upward transference. Here, "upward" refers to Akanistha and the peak of existence, which are, in order, the form realm and the ultimate limit of existence. "Transference" means going there through rebirth. Here, the cause, with and without outflows, is going to Akanistha by alternating and cultivating meditation. What is this alternating cultivation like? There are five aspects: by whom, for what purpose, relying on what mind, how to cultivate, from which five results are accomplished. First, a non-returner, a body witness, and an Arhat cultivate through liberation from both aspects. Second, those with dull faculties cultivate to prolong the obscuration of taste, those with sharp faculties cultivate to abide in happiness in this life, and non-returners also cultivate to be born in the Pure Abodes, but they do not cultivate to be born as Arhats. As it is said: "For the sake of birth and abiding, and for the sake of fearing afflictions." Third, first cultivate relying on the mind of the fourth dhyana, because it is easy due to the supreme workability of the mind. Later, also alternate with other dhyanas and formless absorptions. First, one alternates with the fourth. So it is said. Fourth, cultivate in five ways: small, medium, large, very large, and extremely large. Among these, first cultivating the small is to enter into the fourth dhyana without outflows. After that, with outflows, and after that, without outflows, these three are alternated. Alternating in this way six times, nine times, twelve times, and fifteen times should be understood as medium and above. The Vaibhashikas say that each of with and without outflows is a single moment.
