Regarding attainment: The first fruit is attained only through the path of seeing, because it is distinguished by abandoning what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing. The two intermediate fruits: if attained sequentially, they are attained through the path of cultivation; mostly, if attained through detachment from desire and detachment from desire from desire, they are attained through the path of seeing. The final fruit is attained only through the path of cultivation, because it is distinguished by abandoning what is to be abandoned by the path of cultivation of the upper realms. Which path, mundane or supramundane, is used to attain them? The first and last fruits are attained only through the supramundane path, because the mundane path cannot abandon what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing and the afflictions of the peak of existence. The two intermediate fruits, those attained by the path of seeing, are attained through the supramundane path, and those attained by the path of cultivation: if that person is one who practices calm abiding, they are attained through the mundane path; if that person is one who practices insight, they are attained through the supramundane path. Whatever fruit is attained through the supramundane path, there is no possibility of falling away from it, because the supramundane path uproots the seeds of what is to be abandoned. Those attained through the mundane path, there is a possibility of falling away. Therefore, there is no possibility of falling away from the first and last fruits, while there is a possibility of falling away from the intermediate ones. The fifth aspect, in the Treasury of Knowledge it says: "In the desire realm, three are attained, the last is three, above there is no path of seeing. From the Unborn Sutra, one engages here, therefore it is said to reach the ultimate there." Therefore, the first three fruits are attained only on the basis of the desire realm, because the stream-enterer and once-returner have not yet detached from desire for the desire realm, and the non-returner who proceeds gradually also attains it by relying on the initial application, while the one who transcends abruptly attains it by relying on the path of seeing, because there is no path of seeing on the basis of the upper realms. The reason for this is also because there is no weariness on the basis of the upper realms, and because there is no weariness, in order to necessarily emerge from the three realms, there is no engagement in the noble path. The scriptures also say that the five fruits, such as attaining nirvana in the intermediate state, are engaged in here and reach the ultimate there. The fourth aspect: it can be attained on the basis of all three realms. Second, the classification of the individuals who abide in that fruit is fourfold: stream-enterer aspirant, stream-enterer fruit, once-

Non-returner, Once-returner, Arhat's entering the fruit, etc. The first fruit has two aspects: entering and abiding. The first is: Among the sixteen moments of knowledge and forbearance, the first fifteen moments are called the path of seeing because one newly sees the suchness of truth that one has not seen before. To abide in it, either the abandonment of cultivation that was previously desired has not yet been abandoned, or the abandonment of the fifth level and below, is to enter the fruit of stream-entry, because one is striving on the path in order to obtain the first fruit. If divided, there are two types: the dull-witted follower of faith and the sharp-witted follower of dharma. The second, abiding in the fruit, is when the enterer, in the sixteenth moment, recollects the path, is the abiding in the fruit of stream-entry, because one abides in the fruit of the discipline of the Sugata, having abandoned the three bonds. The three bonds are the view of self, the adherence to ethics and asceticism, and doubt. Why is it that having abandoned these, one is established as a stream-enterer? Because these three are the main things to be abandoned by a stream-enterer, and are the main obstacles to entering the path of nirvana. Thus, the view of self grasps the aggregates as self and rejoices in samsara, causing one not to be liberated from suffering. Adherence to ethics and asceticism regards the wrong path as supreme, and also becomes the cause of definitely going astray. Doubt hesitates about the good path, and becomes the cause of not being able to truly decide. For example, not wanting to go, and wanting to go but relying on the wrong path, and doubting the right path, are like obstacles to reaching the place to be reached. As it is said: Not going and the wrong path, Any hesitation on the path, Are obstacles to the path of liberation, Therefore these three are taught. Why is a stream-enterer called an enterer? Because one has entered the stream of nirvana, having been separated from the obstacles to liberation. If divided, there are two types divided by faculty: faith-resolve and seen-attainment. The first is: When the previous follower of faith abides in the fruit, because one has more faith and more resolve, one is divided by faith-resolve.
