Because various obstacles have been pacified, therefore it is called a Śrāmaṇa. Abandonment is the fruit of abandonment, and liberation is the fruit of a similar cause. These can be called the fruits of the practice of a Śrāmaṇa. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: 'The practice of a Śrāmaṇa is the path of purity, the fruit is conditioned and unconditioned. These are eighty-nine in total, including the path of liberation and cessation.' These, due to temporary differences, the sutras speak of four fruits of the practice of a Śrāmaṇa, such as the stream-enterer. Second, if there are eighty-nine fruits of the practice of a Śrāmaṇa, why are there only four fruits? The Treasury of Knowledge says: 'The four fruits are established because the five causes exist. On the fruit, abandoning the previous path, obtaining others and cessation, obtaining eight complete knowledges, and obtaining sixteen aspects.' This means that in any situation where the five causes exist, it is established as a fruit. For example, abandoning the path of entering the stream, obtaining the fruit path, obtaining the same attainment of all abandonments, simultaneously obtaining eight dharmas and subsequent knowledges, and obtaining sixteen aspects such as impermanence. This is the explanation. Or it should be explained like this, there are three things to be abandoned: the three bonds that are obstacles to entering liberation, the five lower fetters that are obstacles to transcending the lower realms and the lower realm, and the five higher fetters that are obstacles to transcending the higher realms. These are, in order, the coarse, subtle, and extremely subtle that those who desire liberation should abandon. Abandoning these are also the small, medium, and large fruits that are actually sought. Among them, abandoning the first is established as the fruit of stream-entry. The sutra says: 'This person, having abandoned the three bonds, is a stream-enterer.' Making the five lower fetters thin and completely abandoning them are established as the fruits of once-returner and non-returner, respectively. The sutra says: 'What is the fruit of a once-returner? Having abandoned the three bonds, and desire and'

Whichever of the three, hatred, and ignorance, is weaker, that is it. What is the fruit of non-return? It is the abandonment of the five bonds that are in accordance with the final part of the aggregates. So it is said. Why are the two intermediate fruits established upon the abandonment of the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm? Because the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm are very coarse, and because they are abandoned gradually. When most of the afflictions of the desire realm are exhausted, it is established as the fruit of once-return, and when all are exhausted, it is established as the fruit of non-return, in order to show the faults of the desire realm and to show that one quickly transcends it. The third abandonment is established as the fruit of the Arhat, as it is said in the sutra: 'The fruit of the Arhat is the abandonment of the five bonds that are in accordance with the higher realms.' In short, since what is to be abandoned is definitely divided into what is to be abandoned by seeing and what is to be abandoned by cultivation, if it is considered from the point of view of abandoning what is to be abandoned by seeing, it is established as the fruit of stream-entry. What is to be abandoned by cultivation is also divided into two, that which is included in the desire realm and that which is included in the higher realms. The afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm are divided into coarse and subtle, and considering the abandonment of these, the two intermediate fruits are established in order, and the abandonment of what is to be abandoned by cultivation in the higher realms is established as the fruit of the Arhat. Thus, the number of the four fruits is determined by what is to be abandoned. Third, the four fruits are the cause of the later ones, so it is the order of meaning. Fourth, on which ground is it attained? The first and second fruits are based on the first proximity that is not insurmountable, because the afflictions of the desire realm have not been abandoned. The third fruit, if attained gradually, is based on the insurmountable proximity, but if attained by one who is free from desire, it is based on any of the actual grounds of meditative concentration. It is not based on the formless, because that cannot be an antidote to the afflictions of the desire realm, and also because the non-returner is distinguished by abandoning the afflictions of the desire realm. The fourth fruit is based on the six meditative concentration grounds and the first three formless realms. If one is to attain it in the lower two realms, it is based on the six meditative concentration grounds, and if one is to attain it in the formless realm, it is attained by relying on any of the first three formless realms. By which seeing or cultivation
