These are substantial because they are independent and do not rely on others. The twenty-nine mental factors other than these are nominal, because without understanding the nature of the basis of imputation, one cannot understand their characteristics, and therefore they cannot be independent. In general, regarding the nature of substantial and nominal entities, there are those that can and cannot be analyzed by reason, those that can and cannot perform a function, and those that can and cannot be independent. Here, it refers to the former. Nominal entities are also divided into three types: those imputed to a state, those imputed to a collection, and those imputed to a part. Here, it refers to the latter. Secondly, regarding how they are imputed to a person: Stinginess and the like are imputed to the part of attachment. It is not good to say "it is a state." What is imputed to a state is non-associated formations. Resentment and the like are imputed to the part of hatred, because the nature of hatred is commonly related. This reason should also be understood for others. Concealing and the like, saying that they are part of ignorance is rough. If we go into detail, regret, sleep, virtue, and the unspecified all belong to the part of mind and wisdom. Saying that shamelessness and the like are imputed to the three poisons is also similar to the other four, but deceit and cunning do not belong to the part of hatred, but belong to the part of attachment and ignorance. Equanimity, conscientiousness, non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance are the nature of the absence of the three poisons. Even if it is said that conscientiousness is like that, equanimity is said to be substantial in the scriptures. Non-harming is the part of non-hatred, and non-ignorance is the part of wisdom. View and non-knowing are inverted wisdom, and both investigation and analysis are mind when they are not mistaken and not understood, and the part of wisdom when they are understood. It is said that the memory that does not forget the object of affliction is an affliction. Thirdly, analyzing where and how many exist: If these mental factors exist in which realm and how many? In the desire realm, they exist in a way that includes everything, but from anger to regret and sleep, they do not exist above the first dhyana, because there is no object of universal torment, there is no anger, so anger and the like that belong to it do not exist, and because there is no grasping of possessions, there is no stinginess.

Because there is no unwholesomeness, there is no lack of shame and no lack of embarrassment. Because it is contrary to samadhi, there is no regret and no sleep. Because in the special actual practice of the first dhyana, there is no desire for investigation, there is no investigation. Because in the first dhyana there is attachment to retinues, there is deceit. For example, when the Brahma of Ashvajit was asked where the four great elements cease, he did not know, and said: I am Brahma, the Great Brahma, thus joining in deception. In the second dhyana there is no deceit and no investigation, because there is no desire for investigation, and there is no attachment to retinues. Fourth, the necessity of explaining the three dharmas is: Why did the Blessed One teach the Dharma to the trainable beings through the three ways of skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas? Because worldly people have three ways of clinging to self: clinging to a permanent and singular self, clinging to a causal self, and clinging to an eater self, in order to prevent these, the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas are explained in order. As it is said in the Madhyantavibhāga: In one, cause, and eater, these are regarded as persons. Taken from the Compendium of Vinaya, this is the explanation of the first chapter on the explanation of skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas. Chapter Two Second, the detailed explanation of contaminated dharmas is divided into two: the result, which is included in the truth of suffering, and the cause, which is included in the truth of the origin. The first is further divided into two: explaining the external world of containers and contents, and explaining the manner of the formation, duration, destruction, and emptiness of kalpas. First, explaining the external world of containers and contents includes the mandala of the external container support, the establishment of the internal sentient being support, and three common characteristics of these. The first includes the ground of wind, water, and gold, and the manner of formation of mountains, continents, and oceans. First, the realm of the three thousand great thousand worlds is established in this way, because of the power of the karma of sentient beings, the mandala of wind is manifested and established below the container world, its measure is six million yojanas in thickness, and the extent of its circumference is countless yojanas, which is calculated using the last number of sixty numerical places.
