There is no other antidote to eliminate all defilements of afflictions and knowledge than knowing the suchness of all dharmas as they are. Those who do not understand the true nature, like attachment and so on, enter into error with respect to objects, and therefore cannot uproot the obscurations. The suchness of all dharmas, the nature of being unborn, does not depend on various different transformations, because all are equal in having the nature of being unborn. Since there is no difference in the suchness of objects, there is also no difference in this non-conceptual wisdom that has the object of directly realizing that suchness. The wisdom that directly realizes suchness is the nirvana to be attained. As it says in the Garland of Light Sutra: 'If one realizes all dharmas as equal, that is nirvana. And that is one, not two or three.' Therefore, the Bhagavan, you have taught beings one vehicle without distinction, not two or three, and so on. What is that? It is the unsurpassed, supreme Buddha vehicle. Here there are two vehicles: the vehicle of the path by which one travels, and the vehicle of the fruit in which one travels. The first is that which removes the obstacles and stains to obtaining the fruit. And it is not many, because without realizing suchness, one cannot remove stains, and suchness has no distinctions. The second is the wisdom that directly realizes the nature of reality, free from all stains. And it is not different, because the realm of dharma has no distinctions. Therefore, the vehicle of cause and the vehicle of effect are one. Although the vehicle is one, how does it become the Buddha vehicle? For example, just as there are three vehicles—an animal cart, a horse cart, and an elephant cart—which have differences of fast, slow, and very slow, but there is no difference in reaching the same city, so too, the three vehicles of the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas have no difference in leading to the city of non-abiding nirvana. However, in terms of faculties and means,

The difference between being faster than lightning, slow, and very slow does exist. Since this is the case, why are the vehicles of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas said to be obstacles to attaining unsurpassed enlightenment? Because the followers of the Śrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha vehicles do not have the power to generate the mind towards unsurpassed enlightenment without taming their minds with the path of inferior vehicles, they are first led to the enlightenment of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and then gradually attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Therefore, in relation to such individuals, the two inferior vehicles are also methods for attaining Buddhahood. They are established in the vehicle of the Buddha. If Bodhisattvas manifest the path of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, then it will take a long time to attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Therefore, the paths of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas are said to be obstacles to enlightenment. If the Nirvana to be traversed is only the state of the Buddha, then why is it said that the vehicles of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas also lead to Nirvana? This has a hidden meaning. It is like this: Because beings have the defilements that produce faults, therefore the world will not enter the profound realm of the Buddha. Sugatas, because you possess wisdom, compassion, and skillful means, and because you have promised that I will liberate beings. Because for the beings to be tamed, there are obstacles to particularly desiring the unsurpassed wisdom of the Buddha, the cause of producing faults such as desire, the defilements of beings, kalpas, afflictions, views, and life, therefore, the world will not initially enter the profound and immeasurable wisdom of the Buddha. The Sugatas also do not abandon the benefit of beings just because they see that beings are not vessels, because the Bhagavan possesses the wisdom and compassion to tame those to be tamed in other ways, and because he had previously promised when practicing the Bodhisattva conduct that I would liberate all beings, and what was promised must also be accomplished in other ways without fail. Because beings have many obstacles to entering the Great Vehicle, the world
