The very nature of discriminating against the selflessness of phenomena is completely reversed, and that itself is wisdom, as well as skillful means. With various skillful means, it reveals the Tathagatagarbha, or it can also reveal selflessness. Like a potter, it shows with various terms of words and letters. Therefore, the great wisdom of revealing the Tathagatagarbha is different from what the heretics say about the self. Great wisdom, in this way, the Tathagatas, in order to guide those who are attached to the self spoken of by the heretics, therefore reveal the Tathagatagarbha, and show the Tathagatagarbha. How can those who have the thought of falling into the view of discriminating the true self, who have the thought of abiding in the realm of the three doors of liberation, quickly attain the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? And so on. The consciousness of taking is deep and subtle. All seeds flow like a river. If you cling to it as self, it is not right. I have not taught these to the children. These sutras are all clarified as provisional meaning. There are two summaries here: Thus, the Bodhisattva asked the question, and the Tathagata answered. First, from "Bhagavan" to "saying self." Second, there are also two types: brief explanation and detailed explanation. First, from "Bhagavan" to "should not be attached." Second, there are also two types: intention and necessity. First, there are also three types: metaphor, meaning, and summary. First, from "for example" to "various actions." Second, from "Great Wisdom" to "various displays." Third, from "therefore" to "different." The necessity is, "Great Wisdom" and other remaining parts. The brief meaning here is: If the Tathagatagarbha spoken by the Bhagavan is literal, then there is no difference from the self spoken of by the heretics. If it is spoken with intention, then,

"What is the intention and what is the necessity?" This is the questioner's thought. This is not a literal meaning, but has a deeper meaning. The intention starts from emptiness, signlessness, and so on. The necessity is to gradually guide those who are accustomed to the views of non-Buddhists and are not suitable as vessels for profound teachings towards selflessness, and this is the meaning of the answer. In this way, the essence of the Sugata, which is directly grasped by words, is not established even in name, just like the self of non-Buddhists. The intended essence of the Sugata is the Dharmadhatu itself, which is indicated by names such as emptiness and signlessness. Therefore, it is free from all elaborations of characteristics even in name, and cannot be expressed as existence, non-existence, permanence, impermanence, and so on. However, those who are intoxicated by the poisonous water shown by bad spiritual friends, and whose eyes of wisdom are blinded, grasp the profound sutras spoken by the Bhagavan with deliberation according to the literal meaning, and under the guise of the essence of the Sugata, they speak of a permanent and pervasive self, and they themselves abide in the wrong path and lead others into the wrong path. They praise those who act in this way and rejoice because they agree with them. Those who truly speak of the essence of the Sugata's teachings, the meaning of selflessness and emptiness, are attacked and slandered by them with direct verbal attacks, cutting off words and taking them out of context, and they are called "nihilists." Nowadays, they have made the teachings of the snowy land (Tibet), which are like a flame about to be extinguished from firewood, extremely unbearable with the stain of evil views. Second, establishing with reasoning: If there is no object of knowledge, then the removal of knowledge Is easily attained, thus the Buddhas have said. If there is no object of knowledge, the negation of knowledge is accomplished, Therefore, at first, the object of knowledge is negated. If there is no object of knowledge, then the removal of the subject of knowledge is easily attained, because the object and the subject are established in dependence on each other. Therefore, the Tathagatas, wishing to gradually lead sentient beings into the state of selflessness, first said: Whether external appearances exist or not, etc., refuting the object of knowledge.
