It should be known that this is to prevent other things from being the main thing, and to tell the people of the world that these three realms are only mind. Therefore, in this sutra, it is to eliminate form and so on as the main thing, not to say that there is only mind and no form, thereby preventing form, which is not the meaning of the sutra. The meaning of the sutra should be understood as we have said. If not, if you know that these are only mind, and therefore prevent form, then why does the Great Lord say that mind arises from ignorance and karma? If you know that these three realms are made of mind only, and therefore prevent form in the Ten Bhumi Sutra, and declare mind as the real existence, then why does that sutra say: Thus, the Bodhisattva understands the arising of dependent origination as it is. He thinks like this: Not knowing the truth is ignorance of the real meaning. The karma created by ignorance matures, which is the formations. The first mind based on the formations is consciousness. Why does the Great Lord Bhagavan say that mind arises from the cause of ignorance and karma? If the mind is truly existent in its own nature, then it should not depend on causes and conditions. Why is mind the main thing? Therefore it is said: Mind can arrange the sentient world and the container world, which are extremely complex. All beings are said to arise from karma. Without mind, there is no karma. Mind can arrange the sentient world from hell to the peak of existence, each arising from its own unique karma, and the container world from the wind wheel to Akanistha, in various forms, arising from the common karma of sentient beings. As it is said: Sentient beings are dominated by karma, and are born in the dark ages, just like the mind in hell, heaven, and the world, like swords and trees of jewels. Thus it is said that all internal and external beings are born from karma, both common and uncommon, and karma depends on mind.

This is because only with the accompaniment of mind can karma be accumulated, and without mind, karma cannot be accumulated. Therefore, the main cause of wandering in samsara is mind, not form. For example, although form exists, it is not the agent like mind. Although form exists nominally like mind, it is not the agent of karma and other causes of wandering in samsara like mind, because it is inanimate and has no movement of intelligence. Because form has no function of an agent, therefore, it is not reasonable to exclude form by negating an agent other than mind. Some consider the self and the chief, etc., as agents, while others consider the mind as the agent. No one considers form as the agent. Therefore, we see that the chief, etc., are not suitable as agents, and the mind is seen to possess the power of an agent. When it is said, "Mind only," it is not reasonable to exclude form by negating the chief, etc., other than mind, as agents. Just as when two kings contend for the lordship of a single territory, the one who prevails desires to defeat the other, but not the ordinary subjects who are needed by both. Likewise, here, for both views that consider mind as the agent, form is also needed, so there is never any harm. Secondly, showing that the presence or absence of form and mind is the same: Thus, as has been said, abiding in the suchness of worldly people, the aggregates, known in the world, all five are present. If one wishes to manifest that wisdom, for the yogi, those five do not arise. For worldly people abiding in the suchness of the worldly view, all five aggregates are present, because they are well-known in the world. For yogis who wish to manifest the wisdom that realizes suchness, emptiness, those five aggregates, such as form, do not arise, because all the characteristics of elaboration are completely pacified. Because it is so, therefore, if there is no form, do not cling to the existence of mind; even if there is mind, do not cling to the non-existence of form. Why is that? Because nominally, both exist equally; ultimately, both are equally non-existent. The scripture says:

Moreover, it is said that both existence and non-existence are the same. For example: They become Buddhas in the Sutras in the way of wisdom, and similarly, they are abandoned in the Sutras and spoken of in the manifested Dharma. The five aggregates, such as form, are also spoken of equally in the Abhidharma Sutra from the aspects of self-characteristics and common characteristics. In the Prajnaparamita Sutra, all five are equally abandoned and prohibited. As it is said in the Ratnakuta Sutra: 'Endowed with virtue, form is empty by its very nature.' Up to 'consciousness is empty by its very nature.' Therefore, even if these two truths, which are established by scripture and reason, are destroyed, your substance will not be established by prohibition. To say that only mind is established without form is because even if the order of the two truths, conventional and ultimate, as previously stated, is destroyed, your Vijnanavada will not establish the substance of the other, because the substance of the other has been previously prohibited by reason. Therefore, through such a sequence, things from the beginning are not produced, but are considered to be produced in the mundane sense. Third, explaining the intention of other sutras: If those sutras are of that intention, but in other sutras, Vijnanavada can also be established. For example: 'Whether external appearances exist or not, the mind appears in various ways, the body, enjoyment, and place are the same, I say it is only mind.' The body refers to the senses such as the eyes, enjoyment refers to the objects such as form, and place refers to the container world. Therefore, since there is no external object other than the mind, the mind itself appears as the body, enjoyment, and place due to habitual tendencies, therefore, attachment arises to the body and so on, which are different from consciousness. Therefore, if it is said that these three realms are only mind, then there are three points in response to this: indicating that the sutra has an intention, citing its knowledge, and incidentally pointing out the difference between literal and hidden meanings. The first point is: From which sutra does the external object not exist?
