Please also accept this view. Secondly, refuting the cause of conventional truth. Having thus refuted the independence of others, they cannot bear it, so they say again: When there is not even a little independence of others, what will become the cause of conventional truth? When, according to the reasons stated above, there is no independence of others, what will become the cause for establishing conventional truths such as persons and phenomena? Therefore, if it is thought that there is not even a little cause for conventionalities, then, by clinging to things as substances due to the independence of others, all the establishments of worldly conventions will be destroyed. By clinging to the nature of the alaya consciousness as a substance due to the independence of others, as the cause of all defiled and purified dharmas, the conventional truths such as causes and conditions known to the world from ordinary people to shepherds are abandoned. The establishments known to the world, such as "stay," "go away," "do it," etc., and form, feeling, etc., will all be destroyed and ruined. Therefore, for this, there will only be decline, and there will be no increase. Therefore, those who do not respect the establishment of the two truths of the venerable Nagarjuna and speak of mind-only, atoms, nature, etc., have deviated from both conventional truth and ultimate truth. Having deviated from the two truths, liberation cannot be attained. To illustrate this, it is said: From the path of the teacher Nagarjuna, there is no peace for those who have become external. Why is that? Because they have deviated from the truth of conventional truth itself, and there is no liberation from that deviation. Those self and other schools that do not follow the treatises of the venerable Nagarjuna have deviated from both conventional truth and ultimate truth. Because the independence of others, atoms, nature, etc., that they imagine are not established even in worldly conventions, let alone in ultimate truth. This is because all those who assert substantial existence analyze through reason and establish their own tenets. But worldly people only use terms without adding any reason.

Furthermore, why is it that liberation is not achieved by falling away from the two truths? The conventional truth becomes the means, and the ultimate truth becomes what arises from the means. Whoever does not understand the distinction between these two, that person enters the wrong path due to inverted conceptualization. Here, the conventional truth taught by the Sage becomes the means for realizing the ultimate truth; and the ultimate truth that is taught becomes what arises from the means. By abiding in merely the conventional truth, one can also reveal the ultimate truth; and from understanding the ultimate truth, one can also attain liberation. As it is said in the scriptures: "Without relying on the conventional, one cannot realize the ultimate meaning; without realizing the ultimate meaning, one cannot attain nirvana." Therefore, those such as the Mind-Only school who do not understand the non-inverted distinction between these two truths, enter the wrong path due to inverted conceptualization, because they deviate from the two paths that please the Buddha. How do we know that these two truths are the path that pleases the Buddha? After the Tathagata attained complete and perfect enlightenment, he intended to lead sentient beings onto the path that he himself had practiced, because he taught the Dharma through these two truths. As it is said in the Sutra of the Samadhi that Definitely Reveals Reality: "The Knower of the World, without hearing from others, teaches through these two truths themselves. Whatever is conventional and ultimate, there is no third truth besides these. Beings will develop faith in the Sugata, for the sake of happiness, and the Victorious One teaches the conventional for the benefit of beings, for the benefit of the world. Whatever six realms of sentient beings are taught, sentient beings in hell, animals, hungry ghosts, asuras, humans, and gods, the Lion among Men established the conventional. Low castes as well as high castes, rich households as well as poor households, crowds of slaves as well as crowds of servants, crowds of women as well as men and hermaphrodites, whatever differences there are among beings, the Incomparable One reveals to the world, skilled in the conventional truth."
