Now, to destroy all (other sectarian) views, it is like this: Previous experience and later memory belong to the same continuum, and are not the substance of cause and effect, because they are different things. One should widely refute views such as "like experience and memory of different continuums." If according to your view, how does memory arise? Because whoever experienced an object, from that, I have no other memory. Therefore, I will recall the thought "I saw it," and this is also the customary way of worldly speech. Whoever previously experienced an object, from that, later memory is not something else, because the previous experience has disappeared. Because it is not something else, therefore what was experienced is not what memory has not experienced, and what was completely limited by experience is also not what memory has not completely limited, therefore I will recall the thought "I saw it." If one remembers because it is not something else, then will Deva's previous experience be remembered by Dana's current memory? Therefore, this is merely the customary way of worldly speech, and is not something that needs to be investigated very much, because worldly speech is all of false meaning. Therefore, even in worldly speech, experience and memory of different continuums are not spoken of as not being something else, but one's own previous experience and later memory are spoken of as being different, because one will say "I experienced such a thing before." If it is not something else, but similar, why does one say "I experienced it" of one's own previous experience, but not say so of another's experience? This is not something we should argue and investigate, but rather one should argue and investigate the worldly person who speaks in this way. Furthermore, the Madhyamaka school is not trying to establish some truly existent memory, but only to establish conventional truth, merely refuting those who attack the unreasonableness of memory. Regarding this, if experience and memory are different objects, then like consciousnesses of different continuums, memory would become unreasonable. Therefore, this shows that because they are not different objects, there is no unreasonableness in memory. Those who believe that both experience and memory are substantially established

According to the views of the outsiders (Paravadin), since these are different substances, it is not reasonable for the later to remember what the former experienced, just like different streams of consciousness. Even in the same stream, it is not established as the substance of cause and effect, because they are different, just like different streams of consciousness. Therefore, according to their view, memory is not reasonable, and thus the conventional will completely collapse. But for the Madhyamikas, experience and memory are not different, therefore, there is nothing unreasonable in them not being different in stream, and being the substance of cause and effect, etc. Therefore, if there is no self-awareness, by what will your other-powered (gzhan dbang) be grasped? The agent, action, and object are not one, so it is not reasonable for it to grasp itself. Because of the reasons stated above, self-awareness does not exist, and if other consciousnesses do not grasp it either, by what object-possessor will your other-powered be grasped? Furthermore, it is not reasonable for the consciousness itself to grasp it, because in that case, the agent, action, and object would become one, which is also not reasonable. Just like wood, the cutter, and the act of cutting, we do not see them as being one. In the Holy Lankavatara Sutra, it is also said: Just as a sword does not cut its own blade, and a finger does not touch itself, so too is the self-aware mind. Now, to show that it is too extreme to say that the essence of other-powered exists, it is said: If the unborn and unknowable, possessing self-nature, other-powered essence truly exists, then for what reason do you not accept that this exists? What harm has the son of a barren woman brought upon you? The self-nature of other-powered and non-arising from others, these have already been established above, and that it is not known by any object-possessor has just been shown. Therefore, if you accept that the other-powered, which is unborn and not known by anything, possessing self-nature, and free from all elaborations, exists, then for what reason do you not accept that it exists, even though it has the same dharma nature as the other-powered? What harm has the son of a barren woman brought upon you that you do not accept that it exists? Therefore, the son of a barren woman refers to something that exists as the object of the wisdom of the noble ones, which is free from all elaborations.
