The first point: If an other-dependent entity, devoid of the duality of grasping and being grasped, empty of both, truly exists, then by what cognizer will its existence be known? It is not permissible to say that it exists even without being apprehended by any cognizer, because that would lead to extreme absurdity. In this regard, firstly, this is not apprehended by a consciousness that is different from itself, because you have asserted that all consciousnesses are free from grasping and being grasped. It is not established that it experiences itself, because it is contradictory for oneself to act upon oneself. For example, just as a sword's edge does not cut itself, a finger does not touch itself, fire does not burn itself, and an eye does not see itself. Here, to establish self-awareness, an argument is stated: If it is established through later recollection, then, just as a lamp, from the moment it is produced, illuminates both its own nature and objects such as a pot simultaneously, so too, consciousnesses illuminate both their own nature and objects such as forms simultaneously. Therefore, self-awareness must be accepted, otherwise, later, when one thinks, \"I saw a form,\" the memory of the consciousness that experienced the form will not arise, because memory is of an object that has been experienced, and the consciousness that experienced the form has no experiencer. Thus, because there is no self-awareness, it is not reasonable for consciousness to be experienced by another consciousness either. If the consciousness that appears as blue is experienced by another consciousness that arises later than it, then that consciousness would also have to be experienced by another consciousness, and so on, leading to an infinite regress of experiencers. Therefore, later, when one thinks, \"I saw a form,\" it is concluded from the memory of experiencing the form that there is an experiencer of consciousness, and since it is unreasonable for it to be experienced by another consciousness, self-awareness is established.

If it is said that it is established that there is independence from other things, that is also not reasonable. Like this: What is not established, to be established, is said for the sake of. What is not established, this is not, the one who makes it established. Regarding this, let us assume for a moment that the substance of self-awareness is established in the ultimate sense, and say that memory is the establisher. In order to establish the self-awareness that is not established in the ultimate sense, this memory that is spoken of is not its establisher, because like self-awareness, it is also not established in the ultimate sense, because it does not arise from self and other, etc. If it is said that self-awareness is established in conventional terms, and it is said that way, is it only said that memory is the establisher? Or is it said that memory has the cause of self-awareness? According to the first, just as inferring a fire crystal from just fire, or inferring a water crystal from just water, it is uncertain, because memory can also arise without self-awareness, which will be established below. According to the second, in conventional terms, consciousness is not established as self-awareness, because in the world it is said that consciousness understands things. Therefore, in order to establish the self-awareness that is not established in conventional terms, this memory that is said to have the cause of self-awareness is not the establisher of self-awareness, because it is not established like self-awareness. It is like establishing that sound is impermanent by what is apprehended by the eye. Furthermore, having abandoned such an examination, even if self-awareness is admitted, it is said for the sake of refuting it: Self-awareness, though it depends on being established, In that way, memory is not the reason for memory. Because it is other, it is born in an unknown continuum, like that. If it is said that consciousness experiences both the object and its own nature, so self-awareness can be established. Even so, later memory cannot be the reason for remembering the previous experience of consciousness, because it is admitted that the previous experience and the later memory are different entities. For example, the memory in the continuum of Maitreya does not remember the self-awareness and the experience of the object, etc., that arose in the continuum of Nearsidden that he did not know. If it is said that the previous experience and the later memory belong to the same continuum, and are the objects of cause and effect, so even if they are other, they can be remembered. This reason also destroys all the differences, because this reason of "because it is other" can destroy the difference of the sign just mentioned.
