If capacity is the basis of distinction, then since the distinguishing consciousness is a non-existent future, the capacity distinguished by it does not exist. This is because without apprehending the distinction, the mind of the basis of distinction does not occur. If capacity is asserted even for the unarisen consciousness, then the son of a barren woman would also necessarily have that capacity, because they are the same in being unarisen. If it is desired to assert it by saying that it will occur, if one considers in one's heart the future consciousness that will arise from the capacity, and says, 'This is the capacity of this consciousness,' then there is no contradiction in distinguishing and asserting that capacity by the consciousness that will arise. For example, it is like saying, 'Cook rice,' or 'Make cloth from these wools.' If one asserts this, without capacity, there will be no arising of this. If there is capacity, then the future consciousness that will arise from it will become an object of mind. Since there is no future consciousness, there is no capacity distinguished by it. Therefore, just like the son of a barren woman and so forth, without capacity, there is also no very arising of this. This also refutes the examples of cooking rice and so forth. Furthermore, if consciousness exists, then capacity is established; and if capacity is established, then consciousness is established. Therefore, consciousness and capacity become established in dependence on each other. Thus, neither of them is established by its own nature. Like this: 'The establishment that depends on each other for meaning, the holy ones say, is not established.' Those that are established in dependence on each other, like long and short, the far shore and the near shore, are not established by their own nature, so say the holy ones who possess wisdom. As it is said in the scriptures: 'If an entity is established dependently, then it also depends on that itself. If that which is to be depended on is established, then on what does what become established?' And again it is said: 'Whatever entity is established dependently, if it is not established, how does it depend? If it depends on what is already established, then it is not reasonable to depend.' Aryadeva also said: 'Without the result, the cause does not exist; therefore, all results would necessarily become causes.'

Thus it was said. The meaning here is this: if the potency is not established, then consciousness is not established, because potency is accepted as the cause of consciousness. If consciousness is not established, then potency is not established, because potency is called the potency of consciousness, potency is a distinction of consciousness. Thus, if one is not established, then both are not established, therefore it is not established by its own nature. Thus, there is no potency in the future. Now, in order to show that there is no potency in the past, it is said: If it arises from the maturation of the potency of what has ceased, then another will arise from the potency of another. If the consciousnesses that have ceased and passed away, at the time of their own cessation, in order to generate the subsequent fruit that is in accordance with themselves, arise from the complete maturation of the potency placed in the ālaya, if this is the case, then the first two investigations are merely exhaustive investigations, and this is the real assertion of the Yogācāra school. Thus, another consciousness will arise from the potency of another, because why? Because permanent entities exist there mutually distinct. The continuum of consciousness proceeds continuously from moment to moment, and these moments, earlier and later, are accepted by others as being substantially distinct from each other. If another arises from another, what is unreasonable? To this, if another arises from another, then thick darkness should also arise from a flame. And so on, the faults have already been stated. Furthermore, therefore everything should arise from everything. This was also said earlier in the context of refuting arising from another. Here it is said: If here the permanent entities are distinct, but their continuums are not distinct, therefore, is there no fault? If, when consciousness proceeds in a continuum, here the permanent entities exist distinctly from moment to moment, but their continuums are not distinct, therefore there is no fault of everything arising from everything, if this is the case, if it can become faultless, then this is unproven, this is what should be proven. Why? Because there is no occasion for a non-different continuum. Consciousness, moment by moment, substance
