Similarly, the mind also does not arise. The eye, the object of the eye, and the mind that arises from it, all three are false. Just as in your system, external objects do not arise in a dream, so too, the mind's consciousness does not arise. However, just as when one is awake, one sees forms, and the eye, form, and consciousness are the three objects, so too, in a dream, these three are the objects. Just as there, the eye and the object of the eye, form, are not true, so too, the eye consciousness that arises from them is not true. Therefore, all three, the object, the sense faculty, and the consciousness in a dream, are only false. The remaining three, ear, etc., also do not arise. Similarly, in the state of dreaming, the objects from the ear to the mind, the sense faculties, and the consciousnesses also do not arise. Therefore, since all the objects, sense faculties, and consciousnesses in a dream are false, it is not reasonable to say that the mind's consciousness is truly existent. Not only are the objects, sense faculties, and consciousnesses in a dream false, but just as in a dream, so too in this waking state, things are false, the mind does not exist, there is no object of experience, and the sense faculties do not exist. Just as the objects, sense faculties, and consciousnesses in a dream are false, so too in this waking state, in general, all external and internal things are false, and in particular, the apprehending mind, the object of apprehension, and the supporting sense faculties are not truly established. Therefore, it is said in the sutra: 'The wandering of existence is like a dream; in this, there is no death or birth; the name and life of sentient beings are not found; all dharmas are like bubbles and mirages.' Furthermore, just as in waking, as long as one has not awakened, these three exist; when one awakens, all three do not exist. Similarly, awakening from the sleep of ignorance is the same. In this world, just as in the state of waking, there are the three, object, sense faculty, and consciousness, so too, as long as one has not awakened from sleep, the person in the dream has all three, object, sense faculty, and consciousness; the three appear, and there is also attachment to what appears.

Therefore, just as the three (seer, seen, and the process of seeing) in a dream do not exist when one awakens from sleep, similarly, as long as one has not awakened from the sleep of ignorance, the object, sense faculty, and consciousness all exist equally. When one awakens from the sleep of ignorance and directly realizes the Dharmadhatu, which is free from all elaborations, these three, like at the time of awakening, no longer appear. Therefore, it is unreasonable for consciousness to exist without an object. Secondly, refuting the example of sense consciousness being an illusion: If, because someone with cataracts sees non-existent hairs, etc., it is thought that even without an external object, consciousness exists, then there are two refutations to this: a direct refutation and a refutation that eliminates faults. The first is: If there is mind without an object of knowledge, then what are the hairs seen by the mind with the cataract-afflicted sense faculty, through the power of the cataract? That depends on the mind; both are true; when seeing clear things, both are false. The mind of the eye sense faculty afflicted with cataracts, through the power deluded by the cataracts, the objects such as hairs that are seen, also depend on the mind that appears there; both the object and the subject are true, because they appear there. Relative to seeing clear things free from cataracts, both the object and the subject are false, because neither appears there. Therefore, consciousness of a subject without an object never exists. If it is not like that, if there is mind without an object of knowledge, the object of the hair and the eye are related, even without cataracts, hair will appear in the mind, then that is not so, therefore it does not exist. If the object of knowledge, the hair, does not exist, but there is the appearing consciousness, then, when someone without cataracts looks with their eyes at objects such as wooden bowls related to the object of the hair, a consciousness that appears as hair will also arise, because the objects are all without hair. If it is said that the arising or not arising of the appearing consciousness is not determined by whether or not there is hair in the object, but by the difference in other causes of appearance, then, no, because it will be refuted below. Therefore, the situation of hair appearing without cataracts does not exist, therefore, the subject without an object

There is no knowledge. Secondly, the refutation of the defense against its fault: Because for those who see, the mind's ability is not mature, therefore the mind does not arise for it. If you say that it is not because the knowable is separated from things, if the arising and non-arising of knowledge are determined by the existence and non-existence of the object, then it can be like that. But here, from the existence of the knowable, the mind that appears to it arises, not because the knowable is separated from things that its mind does not arise, then what is it? It is because one's own habits are completely mature and immature. Because it is like that, therefore, for those who see hair, the mind's ability of hair is completely mature, because the ability is not completely mature, so for those who do not have cataracts, the mind that appears as hair does not arise. If you say that if there is something called ability, it causes knowledge to arise and not arise from maturity and immaturity, because there is no ability, so this cannot be established. Because of the reason that will be explained, because there is no ability, the certainty just said cannot be established. How can it not be established? It is impossible for the born to have ability, and the nature of the unborn also has no ability. If you think a little about something called ability, is it related to the present consciousness, or is it related to the past and future? If it is like the first case, then for the born present consciousness, it is impossible to have ability, because when it is said to be the sixth case of ability, the ability is present, and it is not different from consciousness, the present itself that consciousness becomes the result, if it also becomes the cause, that is also unreasonable. If so, then the arising of the present consciousness will also become without cause, because the present ability cannot be its cause, and no other cause has been admitted. When it is said to be the fifth case from ability, if the present consciousness arises from ability, that is also unreasonable, because it exists now, and does not need to depend on others. If it is like the second case, then the unborn consciousness related to the future cannot have ability, because without difference there is no differentiated one. It will also be inferred that the son of a barren woman also exists. When it is said to be the ability of consciousness, consciousness is the difference
