It is. For example, those who say that Ishvara is the cause say, "'Ba' is the cause of 'ba' sounds, etc., crystal is the appearance of water, the body is like the limbs, that is the cause of all sentient beings." Similarly, those who speak of the Alaya-vijñana also say that the Alaya itself is the cause of all sentient beings, only that Ishvara is permanent, while the Alaya is impermanent, this is just the difference. Because the establishment of the scriptures is like this, therefore, what is the nature of other-dependence? It becomes the cause of nominally existent things, and arises without an external object to be grasped, having the nature of non-existence and non-object of all elaboration. Therefore, the nature of other-dependence, which is the non-true parikalpita, must be admitted to be the cause of imputation of nominally existent things of person and dharma, otherwise, because there is no basis for confusion, nothing can be confused as self and dharma. For example, the reason for mistaking a rope for a snake is the rope, it is impossible without the rope; the reason for mistaking clay etc. for a pot is impossible in the sky without relying on clay etc. Therefore, this other-dependence, without an external object to be grasped, will appear as the nature of self-duality, and exist substantially as the basis for imputation of self and dharma, having the nature of non-elaboration, non-object of all sounds and conceptualizations, because sounds and conceptualizations are the objects of imputation, and other-dependence is the object of subsequent purity of the world. These are the views of the Vijnanavada. Second, refuting it, there are three: refuting the knowledge without knowable objects, refuting the real existence of other-dependent dualism, explaining the intention of teaching mind-only. First, refuting the analogy of knowledge without external objects, and also refuting other proofs of no external objects. The first is divided into two: refuting the analogy of the illusion of consciousness: Because consciousness is distinguished by the object, to those who have not seen consciousness without an object, and only speak of consciousness, it is asked: 'Where is the example of mind without an external object?'

Said: If asked, is it like a dream? Just as when one lies down in a very small room and is overcome by sleep, and dreams that a herd of elephants is crowded into the room, the situation is not as it appears, because there is no space in the room to accommodate a herd of elephants. Similarly, if it is said that even when all knowledge is absent, phenomena occur, then this is also to show its meaninglessness. This should be considered. Thus it is said, meaning that it should be examined whether the knowledge without an external object is established in a dream. Why is that? Because, when I have no mind even in a dream, then your example is not valid. When, for me, a Madhyamika, not only in the waking state, but even in a dream, there is no truly existent mind, then the dream that you, a Vijnanavadin, propose is not a valid example to prove that knowledge is truly existent. If, when awake, the mind arises from the memory of a dream, then external objects will also become the same. If, when awake, the illusion of consciousness is established from the memory of experiencing the illusion of a dream, then, just as there is knowledge in a dream, external objects will also exist. Why is that? Because, just as you remember "I saw," so too is the external object. Just as in the waking state one remembers "I saw such a thing," so too do external objects, such as elephants, have memory. In order to prove Vijnanavada by example, another argument is stated: If in sleep, eye-consciousness is impossible, then there is no external object, only consciousness exists. Its appearance clings to the external object. If dreams exist as they do here, then. If in sleep, due to the disturbance of sleep, the sensory knowledge of eye-consciousness etc. is impossible, therefore there is no external object, such as form etc. However, only the consciousness deluded by sleep appears as an external object, and in the dream state, its appearance merely clings to the external object. Therefore, just as consciousness without an external object arises in a dream, so too does the waking state. But this is not the case, just as your external object is not in a dream...
