Because for the faithful, there is no opportunity to follow a single, undifferentiated continuum. For example: The dharmas that depend on Maitreya and Nearsidden, because they are different entities, do not belong to a single continuum. Whatever is separate in its own nature, those cannot belong to a single continuum. Just as Maitreya and Nearsidden, the dharmas that depend on other things, because they are different entities, do not belong to a single continuum. Similarly, the earlier and later moments of consciousness, whatever is separate in its own nature, those cannot belong to a single continuum, because they are different entities. In that case, consciousness arises and does not arise from the complete and incomplete maturation of capacity. Saying this is refuted, therefore, the view that without the knowable there is no knowing is established. Second, refuting other arguments for the existence of consciousness without external objects: Again, the consciousness-only proponent, by stating his own system, thinks about how to achieve the desired meaning, and then says: From the arising of eye-consciousness, what kind of self-power, immediately after that, will arise. One's own consciousness, as the power of the basis, is understood in the world as the eye, a sense faculty with form, due to ignorance. The self-power that transforms into the arising of the wisdom of the eye faculty, which is established on the alaya consciousness by the previous consciousness, immediately from that arises the eye consciousness. The eye consciousness, as the power of its own basis, is called the eye, a sense faculty with form, in the world due to ignorance, and there is no eye faculty that is different from consciousness. Similarly, the other faculties should also be understood. Thus, having revealed that there are no faculties different from consciousness, in order to reveal that objects such as form are also not different from consciousness, it is said: Here, the various consciousnesses arising from the faculties do not depend on external objects, but from their own seeds, which have come down through beginningless time, the appearance of blue and so on arises. Because they do not realize this, worldly people assume that there are external objects.

Because of not understanding, worldly beings think that the appearance of external objects is consciousness, and they acknowledge it as such. Therefore, there is no external object that has transformed from consciousness. On the other hand, if you say: In a dream, form and other things are not external, but the mind of that thing's appearance arises from the maturation of one's own ability. Just as it appears in a dream, it is the same when awake, there is mind without an external object. Just as in a dream, form and other external objects are not external, but the arising of the mind of the appearance of form and other things when awake arises from the maturation of the ability that is in accordance with oneself. In the state of being awake, there is the manifestation of mind without an external object, then, that is not right either. For example, just as when there are no eyes, in a dream, the arising of the mind of the appearance of blue, etc. If there is no eye faculty, one's own seed matures, why would it not arise here in the blind? Just as without eyes and form, in a dream, one's own habits are completely matured and the arising of the mind that manifests blue and other objects, corresponds to the eye consciousness of the waking state and arises. Similarly, in this state of being awake, one's own seed is completely matured, why would the mind that manifests blue, etc. not arise in the blind, because it is similar to the state of sleep and having no eyes. If according to your view, the ability of the sixth consciousness in a dream has matured, but it has not matured when awake. If according to your view, not having eyes itself is the cause of consciousness, then what is it? Like that, the ability of the manifestation of mind has completely matured. And in a dream, due to sleep, the ability of the sixth consciousness like that has matured, but it does not exist when awake, so the fault as mentioned above will not arise. If the maturation of the sixth consciousness does not exist here, then why can't it be said that it does not exist in a dream either? If you say that without any reason, just with words, then, with my words, I can also say that just as the ability of the sixth consciousness has not matured in the waking state, it does not exist in a dream either. Haven't you said before that it is because of the existence or non-existence of sleep, which is the cause of maturing that kind of ability? Although it has been said, it is not reasonable, for example
