What is the nature of the extinguished dharmas? It is explained for the sake of extensive teaching. Form has the nature of being formable. Feeling has the nature of experiencing. Perception is the grasping of characteristics. Volition is the manifestation of action. Consciousness is the individual knowing of objects. The aggregates are of the nature of suffering. The nature of the elements is like desiring a venomous snake. Form is form, and when internal and external things come into contact, it has the nature of being formable because it can produce change. Feeling has the nature of experiencing the ripening of virtue and non-virtue, such as joy and suffering. Perception has the nature of grasping the unique characteristics of dharmas. Volition has the nature of the mind manifestly acting upon objects. Consciousness has the nature of individually knowing objects such as form. The aggregates of grasping are of the nature of any of the three sufferings. The elements have the nature of a venomous snake because they are grasped in accordance with the Dharma. Or, because they are the source of suffering. The sense bases are said by the Buddha to be the doors of birth. That is, they are the doors through which mental events or suffering arise. What is dependent origination? It is of the nature of aggregation. Dependent origination arises from the gathering of causes and conditions, and therefore it is of the nature of aggregation. Giving is the perfection of generosity. Morality is the nature of being without affliction. Patience is the nature of being without anger. Diligence is the nature of upholding virtuous dharmas, and therefore it is the nature of being without fault. Meditation is of the nature of gathering. This is because it gathers virtuous dharmas, or because the mind draws near to its object. Wisdom is the nature of non-attachment. Because it leads to nirvana, there is no attachment to anything. These are said to be the natures of the six perfections. As well as meditations and so on.

Non-existence, and likewise whatever else is formless, those, through truly knowing, are declared to be of the nature of non-disturbance. Those meditations and so forth are declared by the Bhagavan to be of the nature of non-disturbance, because they are attained by being free from attachment to desire and by abandoning anger. The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are of the nature of definite emergence. The thirty-seven dharmas of the factors of enlightenment are the cause of transcending samsara, therefore they are of the nature of definite emergence. The nature of emptiness is devoid of conceptualization because there is no object of focus. Because objects are not focused upon, the gate of liberation, emptiness, is not tainted by the defilement of conceptualization, and is of the nature of remoteness. The peacefulness of signlessness, the nature of the third is suffering, and there is no ignorance. The gate of liberation, signlessness, is the nature of peace through the gate of not focusing on signs. The third gate of liberation, wishlessness, is the nature of being without suffering and ignorance, because when one truly observes those conditioned things that are of the nature of suffering, and when one observes the nature of conditioned things with wisdom, one does not wish for them. Among these, the two aspects of selflessness are the aspects of emptiness. Because the signs of the proliferation of form and so forth are close to pacification, nirvana is the aspect of signlessness. The contaminated dharmas included in the two, suffering and origin, are the aspects of wishlessness. The worldly samadhi that focuses on these is called the samadhi of emptiness and so forth, and the supramundane wisdom that focuses on these is called the gate of liberation, emptiness and so forth. The nature of liberation is that which liberates. A form possessor viewing form is the first liberation. A formless being viewing form is the second. The beautiful liberation is the third. The four formless liberations, and the eighth, the liberation of cessation of perception and feeling, are of the nature of liberating because they liberate from the obscurations of meditative absorption. Among these, the liberation of a form possessor viewing form
