In order to pursue its meaning, in order to abandon the afflictions of the three realms, there is a method of fully cultivating the absence of self of the person. Therefore, only the absence of self of the person is taught. Even so, the realization of the absence of self of the person depends on the realization of the selflessness of the aggregates, therefore it is not that there is no realization of the absence of self of phenomena. Thus, the teacher again said these two: For those to be tamed, they are divided and many are spoken. These two types of selflessness are taught by the Bhagavan in accordance with the inclinations of those to be tamed. How are they divided? The sixteen emptinesses are explained extensively, then summarized, and then explained again as four, which are also accepted in the Mahayana. As it is said in the Prajnaparamita Sutra: Subhuti, furthermore, the Mahayana of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is as follows: internal emptiness, external emptiness, internal-external emptiness, emptiness of emptiness, great emptiness, ultimate emptiness, conditioned emptiness, unconditioned emptiness, emptiness beyond extremes, emptiness without beginning or end, emptiness without abandonment, emptiness of self-nature, emptiness of all dharmas, emptiness of self-characteristics, emptiness of non-apprehension, emptiness of the nature of non-things. Thus, after extensively explaining the sixteen emptinesses, Subhuti, furthermore, things are empty of things, non-things are empty of non-things, self-nature is empty of self-nature, other things are empty of other things. Thus, after summarizing, the four emptinesses are explained again. These emptinesses are also called Mahayana, because as an antidote to the obscuration of knowledge, the absence of self of phenomena is extensively taught. In order to explain each of the sixteen emptinesses, it is said: Why is its self-nature, therefore the eye is empty of the eye. Likewise, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind should also be said. Because it is not permanent, nor is it of a destructive nature. What is the selflessness of the six, such as the eye, that

It is considered inner emptiness. Among them, the sense bases from the eye to the mind are called inner dharmas. If these also had some inherent nature, they would either become imperishable, permanently existing, or they would become impermanent, decaying momentarily or continuously. Because it is impossible for things to have other forms. These are merely imputed dependent origination, without any inherent nature, so they are not permanent, eternally existing, nor are they impermanent, decaying momentarily or continuously. Therefore, the six inner sense bases, such as the eye, are from the beginning empty of their own essence, without inherent nature, and this is considered inner emptiness. Why are these, such as the eye, without inherent nature? Because the inherent nature of these, such as the eye, is emptiness itself. Here, the emptiness of the eye and so on is not the absence of things, like breaking a vase with a hammer, nor is it the absence of other meanings, like a valley empty of water. Nor is it the nature of negation, because these are respectively the emptiness of cessation and the temporary emptiness, so they cannot serve as the antidote to the two obscurations. What then is it? The dharmas such as the eye, their own essence does not abide in any extreme of elaboration, such as permanence or impermanence, therefore it is merely labeled as emptiness. Such emptiness is the suchness of reality, because understanding it without error will eliminate the two obscurations. Thus, afflictions and conceptual thoughts arise from clinging to external and internal dharmas as real. When a yogi realizes that all dharmas are from the beginning empty of their own essence and do not abide in any extreme, the clinging to reality ceases, so there is no opportunity for afflictions and conceptual thoughts to arise. Therefore, it is also said in the scriptures: "From karma, afflictions, and conceptual thoughts, from their elaborations, elaborations arise, emptiness will cause them to cease." And in the "Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning" it is also said: "Having found a place anywhere, the cunning, venomous serpent of afflictions, seizes.
