Because it extensively discusses earth and so on. Third, showing that it is designated dependently: Because the capable one (Buddha) said that the so-called "I" is earth, water, fire, wind, and consciousness, space, these six elements, as well as the six bases of contact such as the eye, it is designated by relying on these six bases, and by grasping mind and mental phenomena, it is definitely proclaimed as such. Therefore, this "I" is neither those (six elements, six bases of contact, mind and mental phenomena) nor their nature, nor is it merely a collection of them. Therefore, one should not generate self-grasping towards them. Because the capable one said in the sutra: "Great King, the individual, the person, is the six elements, the six sources of contact, and the eighteen mental activities." Thus, the "I" is designated by relying on the six elements such as earth and water, and the six bases of contact from the union of eye and contact to the union of mind and contact; by relying on the six objects such as form, generating six pleasant mental activities, six unpleasant mental activities, and six neutral mental activities, totaling eighteen mental activities; and by grasping mind and mental phenomena, it is established as "I." Because it is definitely proclaimed that it is established as "I" through the door of the elements and so on, therefore, the "I" is neither the nature of those phenomena nor merely a collection of them. Because the phenomena mentioned above should not be taken as "I," therefore, one should not generate self-grasping towards those phenomena. Thus, the aggregates and so on are not the objects of self-grasping, nor are they different from the aggregates and so on. Therefore, since there is no object of self-grasping, the yogi does not apprehend "I," and also knows that "mine" is not meaningful, thereby abandoning all conditioned phenomena, without any acceptance or rejection, and enters into peace. Therefore, analyzing the aggregates and so on in this way, knowing that there is no "I" that is the same as or different from the aggregates and so on, is extremely excellent. Fourth, refuting the fault of not abandoning self-view: When one realizes no-self, one abandons the permanent self, and this is also not desired as the basis of self-grasping. Therefore, saying "by knowing no-self, one uproots self-view," is truly rare. When the yogi realizes no-self, at that time, he abandons the permanent self by realizing that there is no permanent self that is different from the aggregates and so on, and,

Such a self is not considered by worldly people as the basis or object of clinging, but rather the aggregates are considered as the object of clinging. Therefore, seeing that there is no permanent self other than the aggregates, to say that even the seed of viewing the aggregates as the self with an object is completely eradicated is very ridiculous, because there is no connection between them. In order to clarify this with an example, it is said: Seeing a snake dwelling in a crack in one's own house wall, Saying, "There is no elephant here," dispels the doubt, And also tries to eliminate the fear of snakes, Alas, this person becomes an object of laughter for others. For example, someone sees a snake coiled in a crack in their own house wall, but says, "There is no elephant here," dispelling the doubt about snakes, and also tries to eliminate the fear of snakes. This, in the eyes of other knowledgeable people, simply becomes a laughing stock, because the absence of an elephant cannot eliminate the fear of snakes. Similarly, according to what these people say, clinging to the aggregates and consciousness as the self, because there is no permanent self, it is also impossible to eliminate the clinging to the aggregates as the self with an object. Therefore, this person's cycle of existence will not be extinguished. Conclusion of refutation. Second, the conclusion of refutation has three parts. First, refuting the support and the supported: The self is not in the aggregates, nor are those Aggregates in the self. Why? If there were otherness, The thought of support and supported would arise here, But that otherness does not exist, so here it is just thought. The self does not exist in the aggregates as the supported, nor do the aggregates exist in the self as the supported. Because if there were otherness, like a staff and a staff holder, or yogurt, then the thought of support and supported could arise here. But the aggregates and the self are not other, therefore, thinking of them as support and supported is merely an imputation of thought. Second, refuting the relationship of possessing qualities and the qualified: The self does not possess form, etc., because it does not exist. The meaning of "possessing" is not connected, because the possessor And the possessed are spoken of as different and non-different. The self and form, etc., do not have otherness. The self does not possess the qualities of form, etc., the aggregates, because, the word "possessing," such as "Devadatta has a cow," refers to the word "possessing" only when there is otherness.
