Because there is no realization that is not inverted, and because attachment and so on arise in dependence on objects such as form. Second, refuting the proof: Just as we take the scriptures as a valid means of cognition, speculative valid cognition does not harm it. Moreover, the scriptures only show that the aggregates are the self, like this: Because the Teacher said, "The aggregates are the self," therefore, if one thinks the aggregates are the self, then, because the Teacher said to the monks, whoever, whether a renunciate or a brahmin, thinks, "What am I?" and truly follows after, and I truly follow after these aggregates of grasping, therefore it is said that the aggregates are the self, therefore one thinks the aggregates are the self. If you say that, it is because it prevents other things other than the aggregates, because other sutras say that form is not the self, etc. This sutra does not clearly state that the aggregates are the self, so what is it? It is because it is to prevent the self that is conceived by others and is different from the aggregates, and to clearly explain the truth of conventional truth without inversion. Again, how do you know that this sutra prevents the self that is different from the aggregates? Because other sutras also prevent form, etc., from being the self. How does it prevent it? Because other sutras say that form, feeling, is not the self, nor is perception, nor are formations, nor is consciousness, therefore, it is not thought that the aggregates mentioned in the sutra are the self. If the previous sutra showed that the aggregates are the self, then it should not prevent form, etc., from being the self in other sutras, because it contradicts the previous sutra. Therefore, the previous sutra only prevents the self that is conceived by others and is different from the aggregates, and from the sutra that prevents form, etc., from being the self, it prevents the self that is imputed in dependence on the basis, that is, the object of the view of the collection of destructibles, the one who has the aggregates of grasping, because that is the time to think about this very reason. Furthermore, even if the previous sutra such as "Monks" is determined to be the way to establish it, it cannot show that the aggregates are the self, like this:

If it is said that "I" is "self," then it is the collection of aggregates, not the nature of the aggregates. For example, when it is said that "trees are a forest," the collection of trees is a forest, but not every tree becomes a forest. Similarly, when it is said that "aggregates are self," it is also said that the collection of aggregates is self, not the nature of the aggregates. Even if it is said that the collection is self, it is not reasonable, because: it is not a protector, not a tamer, nor a witness. Because there is no it, it is not a collection. The Blessed One said: "Self is one's own protector, self is also one's own enemy. When doing good and evil, self is one's own witness." Thus, it is said that self is both protector and witness. It is also said: "By taming oneself well, the wise will attain higher realms." Therefore, it is also said to be a tamer. Merely a collection, because it is not real, is not a protector, nor a tamer or a witness. Therefore, the collection is not self. Furthermore, at that time, the places where the collection of limbs is located would become a chariot, and the chariot and self would be the same. As it is said in the sutra: "The so-called self is the mind of Mara, you are the observer. This aggregate of formations is empty, and there is no sentient being in it. Just as relying on the collection of limbs, it is said to be a chariot. Similarly, relying on the aggregates, it is nominally called a sentient being." In this way, the chariot and the self are the same. Therefore, when the collection of aggregates is the self, then the places where the collection of limbs such as screws are located in that chariot would become a chariot. That is also unreasonable, because the collection of limbs would hinder the chariot itself. Therefore, the sutra says that it exists by relying on the aggregates, therefore the collection of aggregates is not self. The sutra says that it is nominally established as self by relying on the aggregates, therefore the collection of aggregates is not self, because: what is nominally established by relying on something is not merely the collection of proximate causes, because it is nominally established by relying on it. For example, relying on elements such as earth, blue and so on are nominally established, as well as what is born from the eye and so on, but those are not merely the collection of elements.

As stated before. If the wheel and so on are merely an assemblage, not a chariot, however, when the wheel and so on possess a distinctive shape, then the name of chariot is obtained. Similarly, if the shape of the aggregates such as form is the self, not merely an assemblage, then that is not so, because it is said: If it is said to be shape, that is because it exists in things with form. You think that those things with form themselves are the self, but the nature of the aggregates such as mind is not the self, because they have no shape. If the particularity of shape is the self, then shape exists in things with form. You think that those things with form themselves are the self, but the nature of the aggregates of the four skandhas such as mind is not the self, because they have no shape, because they are not things with form. Furthermore, the taker and the taken object cannot be the same, because that would lead to the action and the agent being the same. The taker, the self, and the objects to be taken cannot be the same, if that were so, the action and the agent would become the same, but that is not desirable, because the forms and so on that have the elements as their cause, as well as the pot and the potter, would also become the same. As it is said in the scriptures: If wood is fire, the agent and the action become the same. And, the nature of fire and wood, and all the sequence of taking, together with pots, felt, etc., have been fully explained. If one thinks that there is action without an agent, that there is no taker who becomes the agent, but only the assemblage of takers, such as form, which has become action, then, no, because there is no action without an agent. That is not right, because if there is no agent, there is no cause, therefore there will be no action. Therefore, where it is said that the agent is not seen, but there is action and there is ripening, there, it should be known that the true agent is negated. The agent who is dependent and imputed, who has become a branch of convention, is not negated, as it is said that a person associated with ignorance accumulates merit and also accumulates demerit.
