Like the consciousness of the eye and so on, the grasping will not be reversed. Therefore, it cannot be abandoned by not arising the view of the collection of destruction, but it will be abandoned in the manner of abandoning desire, like the eye and so on. Furthermore, at the time of Nirvana, it will definitely become annihilation. In the moment before Nirvana, there is no creator of arising and ceasing, so there is no result. What others have accumulated, others will enjoy. If the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) is the nature of the aggregates, then when the aggregates are without remainder and enter Nirvana, all five aggregates will be cut off, and the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) will be annihilated. In this way, clinging to the extreme of annihilation will lead to extreme views. Because you hold the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) grasped by the view of the collection of destruction as permanent and annihilated, it is therefore established as the view of clinging to extremes. In the moment before entering Nirvana, just as the aggregates arise and cease in each moment, so too will the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) arise and cease, because the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) is the nature of the aggregates. Therefore, it is not valid to say in the sutra, "At that time, at that time, I (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) was a king, I (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) was the son of Lotus-born," because at that time the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) also perishes like the body, and here it is also admitted that other bodies will arise. The treatise also says, "The appropriated is not the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self), it arises and decays, how can it be established that the appropriated is the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self)?" Similarly, if the aggregates are the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self), then they have arising and ceasing. If the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) has arising and ceasing, then at the time of future birth, because the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Devanagari: आत्मन्, Romanization: ātman, literal meaning: self) that previously performed the action has perished, there is no basis for the action, so there is no action, and therefore there is no result of the action. If the result of the action done by the previous moment is enjoyed by the subsequent moments, then the ripened result of the action accumulated by others will be enjoyed by others, so it will become that the action accumulated by others is enjoyed by others. Therefore, it will become that what has been done is fruitless, and what has not been done is encountered. As it is said in the treatise, "If this changes to another, then it will arise without it, thus it abides."
