Showing that it is not a basis. Not only is there no self separate from the aggregates, but also, it is not accepted as the basis of the worldly ego-clinging mind, because even those who are not knowledgeable will cling to self and what belongs to self due to the view of self. The "self" characterized by permanence, etc., is not accepted as the basis or object of the innate ego-clinging mind of worldly people, because even children who do not recognize the "self" characterized by permanence, etc., will generate the view of self and what belongs to self due to strong attachment. If someone thinks that even those who do not understand the characteristics of permanence and non-arising, etc., will develop attachment to "self" due to being accustomed to previous lives, etc., that is not the case. For example, no matter how many eons sentient beings spend in the lower realms, they will not see the characteristics of the unborn and permanence, etc., but attachment to the aggregates still exists. Therefore, no wise person would cling to such a "self" as the basis of ego-clinging. Therefore, there is no permanent "self" that is different from the aggregates. Second, refuting the "self" that is one with the aggregates, first stating the former view: Because there is no "self" different from the aggregates, the object of the view of self is only the aggregates. Those who are respected by many in their own group say: As said, because there is no "self" different from the aggregates, the object of the view of self is only the aggregates, therefore, the so-called "self" is not anything else, it is only the aggregates. Moreover, some believe that the aggregates that are the basis of the view of self are all five aggregates, while others believe that it is only one consciousness aggregate. Some believe that the "self" that is the basis or object of the view of self is all five aggregates, such as form, etc., as the Blessed One said: Monks, when any renunciant or Brahmin correctly observes "self," they are

Therefore, they say, because (the Buddha) said to correctly observe these five aggregates of grasping. Some assert that the mind alone is the self, becoming the object of the view of self. Because (it is said in scripture): 'Oneself is one's own protector, who else could be the protector? By subduing oneself well, the wise attain high states.' Therefore, the mind is referred to as 'self.' If asked, how is this known? Because there is no self to be tamed that is different from the aggregates, and other sutras also state that the mind should be tamed. As it is said in the sutra: 'Taming the mind is good; taming the mind brings happiness.' They say this. The refutation of this is in two parts: the direct refutation and the conclusion of the refutation. The first part includes: stating the harm, refuting the proof, showing that it is named dependently, and the fault of not abandoning the view of self. The first point is: If the aggregates are the self, then therefore, because of the many, those selves will also become many. The self will become a substance, and looking there, since it involves substance, it will not be inverted. If the aggregates are the self, then therefore, since the aggregates are many forms with distinctions such as form, the self will also become many. According to the view that the mind is the self, due to the distinctions of eye consciousness, etc., or because consciousness arises and ceases in each moment, the self will become many. As it is said in the sutra: 'When the world arises, only one person arises.' Therefore, it should not be thought that the self is many. Because substances such as form and feeling, which differ by distinctions such as past, are called aggregates, and only the aggregates are designated as the self, therefore, the self will become a substance. Monks, these five are merely names, terms, designations, namely, past time, future time, space, nirvana, and person. Similarly, just as relying on the collection of limbs is called a chariot, similarly, relying on the aggregates is called a conventional sentient being.' Therefore, it should not be thought so. If the self is a substance, then since the distorted view, which has the characteristic of observing the self, will involve a real object, blue and yellow
