Furthermore, as stated in the sutras: "Whoever becomes attached upon hearing this Dharma, and becomes angry upon hearing non-Dharma, is deranged by pride and arrogance, and experiences suffering under the power of pride." Thus it is spoken. Explanation of the Absence of Self in Individuals Having thus explained the absence of self in phenomena through scriptural and logical means, we shall now explain the absence of self in individuals. In this regard, there are reasons why the self must be refuted, and the actual refutation itself. Firstly: "All afflictions and faults are seen by the wise to arise from the view of the perishable aggregate. Having realized that the self is the object of this, the yogi prevents this self." All afflictions such as desire, and faults such as birth, aging, sickness, and death, arise entirely from the view of the perishable aggregate, which is characterized by grasping at "I" and "mine." As stated in the sutras: "All afflictions have the view of the perishable aggregate as their root, and the view of the perishable aggregate as their origin." Furthermore, for those who have not abandoned the view of the perishable aggregate, actions are manifestly accomplished, and suffering such as birth arises. The self is the object of this view of the perishable aggregate, because the grasping at "I" has the self as its object. Therefore, those who wish to abandon all afflictions and faults should abandon the root of these, which is the view of the perishable aggregate. This will be abandoned by understanding the absence of self. Therefore, the yogi who desires liberation prevents only the self. Secondly, the refutation of that is divided into the refutation of the substantially existent self, and the explanation of individuals as dependently originated. The first is further divided into: the refutation of the self as different from the aggregates, the refutation of the self as identical to the aggregates, and the refutation of the self as inexpressible as either the same or different. Firstly, stating the former's position: What is the nature of the self, the object of the view of the perishable aggregate? In this regard, briefly: "The enjoyer, permanent, real, non-agent self, is conceived by non-Buddhists as having qualities and being inactive. Based on slight differences, the tenets of non-Buddhists become diverse." In this regard, the Samkhyas believe that: "The fundamental nature does not transform, the seven, such as the great one, transform in nature, and the sixteen are transformations."

It is said that the Purusha is neither Prakriti nor Vikriti. Among them, the fundamental Prakriti is Prakriti because it produces sound and other objects to be enjoyed by the Purusha when the Purusha desires to enjoy the objects. And it is not Vikriti because it does not arise from any cause. The seven, namely Mahat, Ahamkara, and the five Tanmatras, are Prakriti because they produce their own Vikriti. And they are Vikriti in relation to Prakriti. The sixteen, namely the ten Indriyas, Manas, and the five Mahabhutas, are only Vikriti because they do not produce fruit and because they arise from a cause. The Purusha is not Prakriti because it does not produce fruit, and it is not Vikriti because it does not arise from a cause. In this order, when the Purusha enjoys all the collections of Vikriti through the arising of desire for birth, it is called Samsara. When the Purusha's attachment to objects becomes small, and gradually meditates and correctly obtains the divine eye, and when he looks at Prakriti with the divine eye, Prakriti does not go to him in a shy manner, and all the collections of Vikriti also become completely pacified in that very moment, reversing from the order of arising. At that time, only the Purusha remains, and therefore it is called liberation. Because he enjoys the objects in the manner described, he is called the enjoyer. Even though the Vikritis have nearly subsided, because he always remains free, he is called eternal. Because the self is neutral in action, it is called non-doer. Because it does not have the nature of the three Gunas of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas, it is without Guna. Because it is pervasive, there is no activity of going and coming, etc. These are the characteristics of the Purusha. Among them, Prakriti is the doer, and some of the Vikritis are doers, and some are not doers. Which Vikritis are doers, and which are not doers? Among them, Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas are the three Gunas. Tamas is the nature of heaviness and covering. Rajas is the nature of movement and engagement.
