Therefore, things do not arise from causelessness and Īśvara, nor from causes, etc., nor from both self and other. Therefore, they arise completely in dependence. Because, as has been said, things do not arise in either of the two truths from causelessness, Īśvara, atoms, nature, puruṣa, sons of Sredimatī, etc., nor from self, other, or both. Therefore, in order not to cut off worldly conventions, one should rely only on the fact that these fruits, such as sprouts, etc., arise completely in dependence on these apparent causes and conditions, such as seeds, etc. Therefore, the sūtra also says: "Here, this is the indication of dharma: this arising, that arises; this produced, that is produced," such as, "Conditioned by ignorance are the formations," etc. And: "This existing, this arises, for example, when long exists, short exists. This produced, this is produced, for example, when a lamp arises, light arises." And the treatise also says: "The agent depends on the action, and the action depends on the agent itself. Apart from arising in dependence, no cause for accomplishment is seen. Likewise, the proximate cause should be understood, because action and agent are eliminated. The remaining things of the agent and action should be understood." Thus, dependent arising is taught as merely this condition. Here, "merely this condition" means that whatever dharma is known in the world as the cause of whatever result, that itself is its cause, showing that it is separate from the unseen Īśvara, nature, atoms, puruṣa, ālaya, etc., and the causes imputed by others. Therefore, the Madhyamikas accept dependent arising as merely this condition, but they do not accept the four extremes of arising, not even conventionally. Because the four extremes of arising are not suitable for dependent arising, and those who deviate from dependent arising are not Madhyamikas. Why are the four extremes of arising not suitable for dependent arising? Because causelessness is not dependent on anything, and dependent arising has the meaning of dependence, therefore it is not suitable for dependent arising.

That is not permissible. If the cause and effect are different, like a pillar and a vase existing simultaneously, they would not be interdependent because they do not rely on each other. If it is one, it does not rely on itself. If it is both, it would become both faults. Therefore, the arising from self, other, or both does not accord with the reasoning of dependent origination. Thus, that which arises in dependence on something is neither the same as it nor different from it. As it is said in the scriptures: "That which arises in dependence on what, is temporarily not that itself, nor is it other than that; therefore, it is neither annihilation nor permanence." This is what is said. Secondly, the benefit of dependent origination is that explaining dependent origination as merely this much of causal aggregation not only dispels the imputations of arising from no cause, etc., but also, because things arise dependently, these imputations cannot be examined. Therefore, this reasoning of dependent origination cuts through all nets of wrong views. Because things arise based on this, this arises, merely by this reasoning, the existence of self is obtained, and not otherwise. Therefore, imputations such as permanence and annihilation, existence and non-existence, both, etc., cannot be examined. Therefore, this reasoning of dependent origination, which is merely this much of causal aggregation, cuts through all the nets of wrong views that grasp at extremes. That is, like this, by acknowledging dependent origination as merely causal aggregation, saying "this arises in dependence on this," one does not acknowledge even a bit of inherent existence in any thing. Because if there were inherent existence, it would not depend on others, and therefore it could not be dependent origination. Therefore, in the Sutras, it is also said: "That which is born from conditions is unborn; it has no nature of being born. That which depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is diligent." And in the treatises, it is said: "That which arises in dependence on this and that, is not born in its own essence. What is not born in its own essence, how can it be called born?" and "Whatever is dependent origination, that is said to be emptiness, that is a designation made as a cause."
