Refuting the Contradictory Argument About Existence: If things do not exist in reality, then in convention they are like the child of a barren woman, because they do not exist. Therefore, are they inherently existent? If these things, such as form, do not exist in the ultimate truth, then just like the child of a barren woman, they would not exist even in the conventional truth. Because they exist in the conventional truth, are form and so on inherently existent? To this, it should be said: Those that become the objects of perception for those with cataracts, such as hair-nets, are unborn. For a while, those with cataracts should be questioned: Later, those whose minds are connected to and obscured by the cataract of ignorance should be argued with and examined as to why they see the unarisen nature of form and so on, but not the child of a barren woman. We should not be questioned or examined, because we yogis see things in this way, and those who wish to attain the wisdom of yogis should also have greater faith in the nature of phenomena as it has been described. We rely on scripture to begin explaining the selflessness of things, not on our own knowledge, because we are the ones whose eyes of wisdom are obscured by the cataract of ignorance. In short, although being unborn is the same, just as those with cataracts see hair-nets and so on, but do not see the child of a barren woman, similarly, although being without inherent existence is the same, there is no contradiction in whether or not form and so on, and the child of a barren woman and so on, become objects of the minds of children. Let the questioning and examination of those with cataracts be put aside for now. For a while, you yourself should be questioned and examined more thoroughly. If dreams, cities of gandharvas, and mirage water, and forms created by magical illusions

Images, etc. If one sees the unborn, although it is similar to not being existent, how does it become that for you? This is unreasonable. You yourself sometimes see dreams and cities of gandharvas, etc., which are of the nature of unborn, although they are similar to not being existent in reality. However, how does it become for you that you see dreams, etc., but do not see sons of barren women, etc.? Question and examine yourself, and later you should also question and examine us. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that if forms, etc., are without inherent existence, then they are the same as the existence or non-existence of a son of a barren woman. Furthermore, how is it that even though it is unborn in reality, why does it not become an object of sight in the world, like the son of a barren woman? Therefore, this statement is uncertain. As it is said in the sutra: "Beings are said to be like dreams, and no distinctions are made in them. Whatever in dreams has no reality, those with wrong thoughts are manifestly attached to it. Although the city of gandharvas appears, the city is not in any of the ten directions, nor is it elsewhere. It is established only by the name of a city. Thus the Sugata sees these beings. Those with the perception of water see mirages, but there is no water in them. Thus, they are disturbed by complete imputation, and they perceive suffering in what is not suffering. In a perfectly pure mirror, how do images without inherent existence appear? Thus, know trees and all phenomena." As it is said in the scriptural authority, even though forms, etc., are unborn in that very nature, they are not like the son of a barren woman, not becoming an object of sight in the world in name. Therefore, if things are not in that very nature, then in name also, like the son of a barren woman. Such a statement is uncertain for you yourself. Thus, the first two verses show uncertainty through the door of self-accepted examples, and the last verse shows uncertainty through the door of scriptural authority. Therefore, for the Madhyamikas, there is nothing to be questioned or examined through the door of what has been said, for we accept that forms, etc., arise inherently in conventional truth, but we do not negate them in ultimate truth. If asked what it is, the son of a barren woman, by his own nature, is born.
