Moreover, it is severely polluted by the dirt of evil views. Second, establishing through reasoning: If there is no object of knowledge, then the elimination of the knower is easily attained, as the Buddhas have said. If there is no object of knowledge, then the prevention of the knower is accomplished, therefore, initially, the object of knowledge is negated. If there is no object of knowledge, then the elimination of the subject, the knower, is easily attained, because the object and the subject are established in mutual dependence. Therefore, the Thus-Gone Ones, wishing to gradually lead sentient beings into the state of selflessness, initially only say, 'External appearances exist or do not exist,' and so forth, negating the object of knowledge, because those who understand the selflessness of the object of knowledge easily enter into the negation of the self of the knower. In this way, those who understand the selflessness of the object of knowledge sometimes realize the emptiness of their own nature by themselves, and sometimes they realize it by being shown a little bit. Third, showing the difference between the provisional and the definitive: Thus, having understood the history of the scriptures, whatever sutra does not directly explain the ultimate truth, which is distinguished by dependent arising and non-arising, but directly explains the meaning of conventional truth, can be interpreted as the meaning of emptiness. These are only taught as a means to enter into selflessness, so they are provisional. One should also understand what the intention of these sutras is, and interpret and explain them in such a way that there is no harm. Whatever sutra directly explains emptiness and non-arising, etc., the meaning of these sutras cannot be interpreted in any other way, so it should be known as definitive. The difference between the provisional and the definitive is like this, as it is said in the 'Noble Samādhirāja Sūtra': 'Emptiness is taught by the Sugata, know the distinction of the definitive sutras. Whatever sutra teaches sentient beings and individuals, know that all those teachings are provisional.' Thus it is said, and similarly

In the Sutra Taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence, it is also said: What is a sutra of interpretable meaning? A sutra from which the conventional truth is spoken, this is interpretable meaning. What is a sutra of definitive meaning? A sutra from which it is spoken for the purpose of manifesting the ultimate truth, this is definitive meaning. A sutra from which various words and letters are spoken, that is interpretable meaning. A sutra from which what is profound, difficult to see, and difficult to comprehend is spoken, that is definitive meaning. A sutra from which the various sounds and words of "self (藏文:བདག་,梵文天城体:ātman,梵文罗马拟音:ātman,汉语字面意思:我)", "sentient being (藏文:སེམས་ཅན་,梵文天城体:sattva,梵文罗马拟音:sattva,汉语字面意思:有情)", "life (藏文:སྲོག་,梵文天城体:jīva,梵文罗马拟音:jīva,汉语字面意思:命)", "nourisher (藏文:གསོ་བ་པོ་,梵文天城体:poṣaka,梵文罗马拟音:poṣaka,汉语字面意思:养育者)", "person (藏文:སྐྱེས་བུ་,梵文天城体:puruṣa,梵文罗马拟音:puruṣa,汉语字面意思:士夫)", "individual (藏文:གང་ཟག་,梵文天城体:pudgala,梵文罗马拟音:pudgala,汉语字面意思:补特伽罗)", "born of strength (藏文:ཤེད་ལས་སྐྱེས་,梵文天城体:balaja,梵文罗马拟音:balaja,汉语字面意思:力生)", "possessor of strength (藏文:ཤེད་བུ་,梵文天城体:balin,梵文罗马拟音:balin,汉语字面意思:力子)", "maker (藏文:བྱེད་པ་པོ་,梵文天城体:kāraka,梵文罗马拟音:kāraka,汉语字面意思:作者)", and "feeler (藏文:ཚོར་བ་པོ་,梵文天城体:vedaka,梵文罗马拟音:vedaka,汉语字面意思:受者)" are spoken as if there were a possessor for what is without a possessor, that is interpretable meaning. A sutra from which emptiness (藏文:སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་,梵文天城体:śūnyatā,梵文罗马拟音:śūnyatā,汉语字面意思:空性), signlessness (藏文:མཚན་མ་མེད་པ་,梵文天城体:animitta,梵文罗马拟音:animitta,汉语字面意思:无相), wishlessness (藏文:སྨོན་པ་མེད་པ་,梵文天城体:apraṇihita,梵文罗马拟音:apraṇihita,汉语字面意思:无愿), non-conceptualization (藏文:མངོན་པར་འདུ་བྱེད་པ་མེད་པ་,梵文天城体:anabhisaṃskāra,梵文罗马拟音:anabhisaṃskāra,汉语字面意思:无作), unarisen (藏文:མ་བྱུང་བ་,梵文天城体:anutpāda,梵文罗马拟音:anutpāda,汉语字面意思:无生), unborn (藏文:མ་སྐྱེས་པ་,梵文天城体:ajāta,梵文罗马拟音:ajāta,汉语字面意思:不生), non-entity (藏文:དངོས་པོ་མེད་པ་,梵文天城体:avastu,梵文罗马拟音:avastu,汉语字面意思:无物), non-sentient being (藏文:སེམས་ཅན་མེད་པ་,梵文天城体:asattva,梵文罗马拟音:asattva,汉语字面意思:无有情), non-life (藏文:སྲོག་མེད་པ་,梵文天城体:ajīva,梵文罗马拟音:ajīva,汉语字面意思:无命), non-individual (藏文:གང་ཟག་མེད་པ་,梵文天城体:apudgala,梵文罗马拟音:apudgala,汉语字面意思:无补特伽罗), non-possessor (藏文:བདག་པོ་མེད་པ་,梵文天城体:anātha,梵文罗马拟音:anātha,汉语字面意思:无主宰), and the doors of liberation (藏文:རྣམ་པར་ཐར་པའི་སྒོ་,梵文天城体:vimokṣa-dvāra,梵文罗马拟音:vimokṣa-dvāra,汉语字面意思:解脱之门) are spoken, that is definitive meaning. Therefore, in the Noble Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it says that the sutras that teach all phenomena as without inherent existence are interpretable, and those that teach that the imagined does not exist but the dependent does are also intentional. This scripture can be known by this very statement, and it can also be established by reasoning, because there is no harm to the actual meaning of the sutras that teach that all phenomena are unborn, because they prevent and stop all phenomena from arising from the four extremes. The actual meaning of the sutras that teach that the dependent exists is not established as it is, because the dependent is established as substantial, which has already been well prevented by scripture and reasoning. Therefore, whatever sutra's directly stated meaning is not harmed by reasoning is definitive meaning, and whatever sutra's directly stated meaning is harmed by reasoning is called interpretable meaning. What is the meaning of the three natures of the imagined, the dependent, and the perfectly established, which are spoken in other sutras? For example, the object of a snake is imagined in dependence on the condition of a coiled rope, when one grasps the rope as a snake.
