In order to abandon those places, therefore, it is taught through the essence of the Thus-Gone One, thereby showing the realm of non-discrimination, which is the object of experience without appearance. Great Wisdom, future and present Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should not be attached to the self. Great Wisdom, for example, a potter, with a lump of clay, possessing hands, craftsmanship, tools, water, thread, and diligence, makes various kinds of vessels. Great Wisdom, similarly, the Thus-Gone Ones, with the nature of discriminating the selflessness of phenomena completely reversed, with wisdom and skillful means, by teaching the essence of the Thus-Gone One or by teaching selflessness, just like a potter, teach with various names of words and letters. Therefore, Great Wisdom, teaching the essence of the Thus-Gone One is not the same as the self spoken of by the heretics. Great Wisdom, in order to guide those who are attached to the self spoken of by the heretics, the Thus-Gone Ones teach the essence of the Thus-Gone One, thereby showing the essence of the Thus-Gone One. How can sentient beings who have fallen into the view of discriminating a true self have the intention of abiding in the realm of the three doors of liberation and quickly attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? And so on. The consciousness of taking is deep and subtle, and all seeds flow like a stream of water. It is not reasonable to grasp at the self, this self has not been taught to children. These sutras clearly explain that they are of hidden meaning. The summary meaning here is twofold: that is, the Bodhisattva asks a question, and the Thus-Gone One answers. First, from "Bhagavan" to "saying self." Second, there are also two types: brief explanation and extensive explanation. First, from "Bhagavan" to "should not be attached." Second, there are also two types: intention and necessity. First, there are also metaphors and

There are three parts: meaning and conclusion. The first part is from "for example" to "do various things." The second part is from "great wisdom" to "show in various ways." The third part is from "therefore, because of that reason" to "not the same." What is needed is the remaining part, such as "great wisdom." The concise meaning here is: The Tathagatagarbha spoken by the Bhagavan, if understood literally, would become no different from the "self" spoken of by the heretics. If it was spoken after careful consideration, then the questioner's thought is, what is the basis and necessity of that careful consideration? This is not to be understood literally, but with a deeper meaning. The basis of careful consideration is emptiness and signlessness, and so on. The necessity is to gradually guide those sentient beings who are accustomed to heretical views and are not suitable as vessels for profound teachings towards selflessness, so it is taught. This is the meaning of the answer. In this way, the Tathagatagarbha, which is directly grasped by language, is not even established in mere terms, as it is similar to the "self" of the heretics. The Tathagatagarbha of careful consideration is the Dharmadhatu itself, which is indicated by names such as emptiness and signlessness. Therefore, even in terms, it is free from all elaborations of characteristics. It cannot be expressed in any way as existence, non-existence, permanence, impermanence, and so on. However, those who are intoxicated by the poison shown by bad friends, and whose eyes of wisdom are blinded, take the profound sutras spoken by the Bhagavan after careful consideration literally, and under the guise of the Tathagatagarbha, proclaim a permanent and pervasive "self," and themselves abide in the wrong path, and lead others into the wrong path. They praise those who have entered the wrong path in this way and rejoice in their agreement. Those who truly speak of the essence of the Tathagata's teachings—selflessness and emptiness—are ridiculed by them with direct verbal attacks, taking things out of context, and are reviled as "nihilists." Today, they are making the Buddhism of the Land of Snows (Tibet) like a flame on wood that is about to be exhausted.
