The faculties are the senses. Enjoyment is the objects such as forms. The place is the container world. Because there is no external reality other than the mind, the mind itself, by the power of habit, appears as body, enjoyment, and place. When this arises, it is attachment to the body and so on, which are different from consciousness. Therefore, if it is asked whether these three realms are only mind, there are three answers to this: to show that the sutra has a hidden meaning, to give its means of knowing, and to show the difference between provisional and definitive meaning. The first is: From which sutra is there no external object, and the mind itself appears in various ways? For those who are particularly attached to form, causing form to cease is also of provisional meaning. In the Lankavatara Sutra and others, is there or is there not an external appearance? Thus, there is no external reality, but the mind itself appears in various ways as body and enjoyment. The intention of what is said is that among sentient beings, those who are particularly attached to form, due to that condition, the afflictions such as desire arise involuntarily, and from that basis they commit great sins, that is, those who fall away from the accumulation of merit and wisdom. For those, the Blessed One, in order to destroy the afflictions caused by form, as it is said to those who are attached to contemplate skeletons, although it is not exactly as it is, it should be understood that it is said as mind-only by causing form to cease. Therefore, that sutra is also of provisional meaning. If it is asked, how is it known that this is also of provisional meaning and not of definitive meaning? Second, to give the means of knowing, in two parts: by scripture and by reasoning. The first is: This is said by the Teacher to be of provisional meaning, and this is also reasonable as provisional meaning. Not only is this sutra alone of provisional meaning, but other sutras of that kind are also clarified as provisional meaning by this scripture. Those who consider Vijnanavada to be of definitive meaning, in the Sutra Unraveling the Thought and others, among the three natures of the completely imputed, the other-powered, and the thoroughly established, there is no completely imputed, and there is the other-powered, and likewise, the taking consciousness is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a stream. If self-grasping arises, then there is no

It is not reasonable, I have not shown these to children. Like that, in other sutras it is also said: Just as a doctor gives medicine to a sick person, the Buddha also taught only mind to sentient beings. This quote clearly shows that the existence or non-existence of external appearances, etc., is the ultimate meaning. Just as doctors give different medicines because of the different kinds of diseases of the patients, the Tathagata's teaching of only mind is also shown to be dependent on the different thoughts of the beings to be tamed. If teaching only mind is the definitive meaning, then it is not necessary to say again that teaching only mind is to adapt to the different thoughts of the beings to be tamed. Similarly, in the Lankavatara Sutra, the Blessed One spoke of the Tathagatagarbha in the sutra, saying that the Tathagatagarbha, which is naturally luminous, completely pure, and completely pure from the beginning, has the thirty-two marks and exists in the bodies of all sentient beings. The Blessed One's jewel, like a precious jewel wrapped in a dirty cloth, is wrapped in the cloth of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas, suppressed by desire, hatred, and ignorance, and defiled by false discriminations. If it is said to be permanent, stable, and real, then Blessed One, what is the difference between the Tathagata's speaking of the Tathagatagarbha and the self of the non-Buddhists? Blessed One, the non-Buddhists also say that the self is permanent, the agent, without गुण (藏文:ཡོན་ཏན་མེད་པ།,梵文:गुण,Romanization: guṇa, literal meaning: merit), pervasive, and indestructible. The Blessed One said: Great Wisdom, teaching the Tathagatagarbha is not the same as the non-Buddhists. Great Wisdom, the Tathagatas, Arhats, and Samyaksambuddhas teach the meaning of words such as emptiness, the limit of reality, Nirvana, non-arising, non-ceasing, signless, and wishless as the Tathagatagarbha, so that children will not be afraid of selflessness.
