By what will its existence be known? Without apprehension, it cannot be said to exist. If the other-powered entity, empty of both grasper and grasped, truly exists, then by what object-possessor will this existence itself be known? It is not permissible for any object-possessor to say it exists without apprehension, because that would be too extreme. In this regard, for the time being, it is not apprehended by a consciousness that is different from itself, because it has been promised that all consciousnesses are free from grasper and grasped. It is not established that it experiences itself. Because acting on oneself is contradictory, just as a sword's edge does not cut itself, a finger does not touch itself, fire does not burn itself, and an eye does not see itself. Here, in order to establish self-awareness, the means of establishment is stated. If it is said that it is established by later recollection, just as a lamp, from the moment it arises, simultaneously illuminates both its own nature and objects such as a vase, likewise, all consciousnesses simultaneously illuminate their own nature and objects such as forms. Therefore, self-awareness must be accepted, otherwise, later, thinking, "I saw a form," recollection of the consciousness that experienced the form will not arise, because recollection is the object of experience, and the consciousness that experienced the form has no experiencer. Thus, because there is no self-awareness, and it is not reasonable for consciousness to be experienced by another, if the consciousness that appears blue is experienced by another that arose later than the consciousness itself, then that too must be experienced by another, and so on, leading to an infinite regress of experiencers. Therefore, later, thinking, "I saw a form," from the recollection of experiencing the form, it is established that consciousness has an experiencer, and because experience by another is unreasonable, self-awareness is established. If it is said that from self-awareness, other-power is established, that is also unreasonable, for example: What is unestablished is stated in order to establish it. This unestablished is not what establishes. In this regard, for the time being, assuming that the entity of self-awareness is established in the ultimate sense, and stating recollection as the cause of establishment, in order to establish self-awareness that is not established in the ultimate sense, what is said

This memory is not the means of establishing it, because like self-awareness, it is not established in the ultimate sense, since it does not arise from self, other, etc. If it is said that one speaks in this way by assuming the establishment of self-awareness in conventional terms, then is one saying that mere memory is the means of establishment, or is one speaking of memory that has self-awareness as its cause? If it is the former, it is uncertain, just as inferring a burning glass from mere fire, or a water-crystal from mere water, because memory can arise even without self-awareness, as will be proven below. If it is the latter, then in conventional terms, the self-awareness of consciousness is not established, because in the world, one speaks of knowing things through consciousness. Therefore, the memory that is said to have self-awareness as its cause, in order to establish self-awareness that is not established in conventional terms, is not the means of establishing self-awareness, because it is not established like self-awareness. It is like establishing the impermanence of sound by means of what is perceived by the eye. Furthermore, even if one abandons such speculation and concedes self-awareness, it is said in order to refute it: Self-awareness may be established, but in that way, it is not reasonable to remember memory, just as something unknown arises in another's mind. If it is said that consciousness experiences both the object and its own nature, so self-awareness can be established. Even so, later memory cannot reasonably remember the previous experience of consciousness, because the previous experience and the later memory are conceded to be different entities. For example, just as the memory in the mind-stream of Maitreya does not remember the self-awareness and the experience of objects, etc., that arose in the mind-stream of Nerasrita, which he did not know. If it is said that the previous experience and the later memory belong to the same mind-stream, and are cause and effect, so even if they are different, they can be remembered. Then, this reason destroys all the distinctions. Because the reason "because it is different" itself destroys all the distinctions of the sign that were just mentioned. Like this, the previous experience and the later memory do not belong to the same mind-stream, and are not cause and effect, because they are different entities. Just like experience and memory in different mind-streams, etc., should be refuted extensively. According to your view, how does memory arise? Because what what
