It is cessation. Furthermore, if consciousness exists, then capacity is established; if capacity is established, then consciousness is established. Because consciousness and capacity are established in dependence on each other. Thus, neither of the two is established by its own nature. For example: That which is established in dependence on each other's meaning, the noble ones say is not established. Those that are established in dependence on each other, like long and short, the opposite shore and this shore, are not established by their own nature, so say the noble ones who possess wisdom. As it is said in the scriptures: If an entity is established by dependence, then it also depends on itself. If that which is to be depended on is established, then on what does it depend to be established? And again it is said: If an entity is established by dependence, how does it depend if it is not established? If it is established and then depends, then it is not reasonable to depend. Aryadeva also said: Without a result, there is no cause. The cause itself does not exist, therefore all results would become causes. The meaning here is this: without capacity, consciousness is not established, because capacity is asserted to be the cause of consciousness. Without consciousness, capacity is also not established, because capacity is made a distinction of consciousness, being the capacity of consciousness. Thus, even if one is not established, both are not established, therefore there is no establishment by its own nature. Thus, there is no capacity in the future. Now, to show that there is also no capacity in the past, it is said: If it arises from the maturation of the capacity of cessation, then another will arise from the capacity of another. If the consciousnesses that have ceased and passed, in the state of their own cessation, in order to generate a subsequent result that is in accordance with themselves, arise from the complete maturation of the capacity placed on the alaya, then, the first two examinations are merely extreme inferences, and this is the actual assertion of the Mind-Only school. Thus, another consciousness will arise from the capacity of another, because permanent things are mutually distinct there.

Without observation, consciousness arises continuously in successive moments, possessing continuity. Other schools accept that these successive moments are mutually distinct in their substance. If one says that it is reasonable for one thing to arise from another, what is unreasonable about that? In response: If one thing arises from another, then thick darkness would arise from flames. And so on, these faults have already been stated. Furthermore, therefore everything arises from everything. This has also been previously stated in the context of refuting arising from another. Here, someone says: If here there is a continuous difference, because they do not have a continuous difference, therefore there is no fault. If one says that when consciousness arises in a continuous manner, although the successive moments of the continuum are different, because their continuum has no difference, therefore there is no fault of everything arising from everything, if this is the case and there is no fault, this is not established, this needs to be established. Why? Because there is no opportunity for a non-different continuum. Because for things that are different in substance, the successive moments of consciousness, there is no opportunity for a non-different continuum to follow. That is, like this: Like the phenomena that rely on Maitreya and Near-Protected, because they are of a different nature, they do not belong to one continuum, those who are individually different by their own characteristics, they should not belong to one continuum. Just like Maitreya and Near-Protected, the phenomena that depend on others, because they are of a different nature, do not belong to one continuum. Similarly, the successive moments of consciousness, those who are individually different by their own characteristics, those should not belong to one continuum, because they are of a different nature. Thus, consciousness arises and does not arise from the complete and incomplete maturation of abilities. Saying this has been refuted. Therefore, if there is no knowable object, there is no knower, this principle is established. Second, refuting other arguments for the existence of consciousness without external objects. Again, the consciousness proponent, by stating his own system, thinks that he can accomplish the meaning he wants to express, and says: When eye consciousness arises, from its own ability, immediately it will arise, on the ability of the basis of one's own consciousness, the sense
