Why is that? Because just as you think I see and remember, the same is true for external objects. Just as in the waking state, remembering that one knows, 'I saw such a thing,' is the same as elephants and other objects also having memory. The proponents of consciousness-only state another proof to establish their point: If eye-consciousness is impossible in sleep, then only mind-consciousness exists, and its appearance is merely clinging to external objects. If it exists here as in a dream, if in sleep the sense consciousnesses such as eye-consciousness are impossible because they are disturbed by it, then external objects such as form do not exist. However, the appearance of consciousness disturbed by sleep is merely appearing as an object, just like in a dream, it is merely clinging to external objects. Therefore, just as consciousness without an object arises in a dream, does it also arise in this waking state? That is not so. Just as your external object does not arise in a dream, neither does consciousness arise. However, just as when one sees form in the waking state, the eye, form, and consciousness are all apprehended, so too in a dream, these three are apprehended. Just as there, the eye and the object of the eye, form, are not truly existent, neither is the eye-consciousness born from it truly existent. Therefore, all three – the object, sense faculty, and consciousness – in a dream are purely false. The remaining three, such as ear, also do not arise. Similarly, in the state of dreaming, the objects, sense faculties, and consciousnesses from ear to mind also do not arise. Therefore, since all the objects, sense faculties, and consciousnesses in a dream are false, it is unreasonable to say that consciousness is truly existent. Not only are the objects, sense faculties, and consciousnesses in a dream false, but also, just as in a dream, here in waking, things are false.

Because mind does not exist. There is no object of experience, and the senses do not exist either. Just as the objects, senses, and consciousness in a dream are false, so too is this the case when awake. In general, all phenomena, both internal and external, are false. In particular, the mind that focuses on an object, the object of experience that is focused on, and the senses that serve as the basis, are also not established as real. Therefore, the sutra says: The cycle of existence is like a dream, in which there is no death and no birth. Beings, names, and lives are not found, all these phenomena are like bubbles, water, and plantain trees. Thus it is said. Furthermore, this is like being awake, for as long as one is not awake, the three exist. When one becomes awake, all three do not exist, just like awakening from the sleep of ignorance. In this world, just as there are object, sense, and consciousness when one is awake, so too, as long as one has not awakened from sleep, the person in the dream has all three: object, sense, and consciousness. Because there is an appearance of three, and there is also attachment to what appears. Just as when one awakens from sleep, the three from the dream state do not exist, so too, as long as one has not awakened from the sleep of ignorance, object, sense, and consciousness all exist equally. When one awakens from the sleep of ignorance and directly realizes the dharmadhatu, which is free from all elaboration, the three do not appear as they did when one was awake. Therefore, it is not reasonable for consciousness to exist without an object. Second, refuting the analogy of sense consciousness as an illusion: If, because someone with cataracts sees non-existent hairs, etc., therefore, even if there is no external object, there is consciousness, then there are two types of refutation: a direct refutation and a refutation that removes its faults. The first is: If there is intelligence without an object of knowledge, by what intelligence of the senses with cataracts, whatever hairs are seen by the power of the cataracts, that depends on the intelligence, both are real, when seeing clearly, both are also false. The intelligence of the senses with cataracts, by the power of delusion by the cataracts, whatever object such as hairs is seen, that also depends on the intelligence that appears there, both the object and the subject are real, because they appear there.
