Because it has already been established. Thus, the Madhyamikas, unlike nihilists, do not deny the relationship of cause and effect, nor do they add to it like realists. However, as stated, they abandon all extremes of permanence and annihilation and accept dependent origination. This profound dependent origination is the single path traversed by all Sugatas, yet just as those without wings cannot walk in the sky, so too, those who do not possess the wings of expertise in the ways of the two truths, conventional and ultimate, cannot easily walk the path of dependent origination. Giving is sufficient. Secondly, incidentally, showing that the basis of cause and effect is taught as definitive: Thus, if the relationship of karma is established without inherent existence in the manner described above, then, in the *Lankavatara Sutra* and others, it is said that the alaya-vijñana (kun gzhi'i rnam par shes pa,一切种识,sarva-bīja-vijñāna,all-ground consciousness) is the basis for the impregnation of limitless dharmas, possessing all seeds, like waves arising from the ocean, it is the cause for the arising of all defiled dharmas according to their conditions, possessing such a nature, then, is all of that non-existent? It is not so, because the teaching of such an alaya is due to the intention towards those to be tamed, and thus it is shown to exist. With what intention is it said that the alaya exists? It is said with the intention of the emptiness of the nature of all dharmas, because it follows the nature of all things, and therefore it can serve as the meaning of the word alaya. If it is not so, but the alaya exists as it is in the literal sense, then the faults will be explained below. Not only the alaya, but also due to the intention, it is said that there is a person (pudgala), as it is said: "Monks, the five skandhas are a burden, the bearer of the burden is the person." For some, only the skandhas are shown, that which is called mind, or intellect, or consciousness, that which has been cultivated for a long time with faith, discipline, and so on, and which increases upwards, will be reborn in the future in a higher realm.

As it is said. All of this was spoken with a hidden meaning. What is the hidden meaning here? Saying that the ālaya-vijñāna exists, that the person (Pudgala) exists, and saying that these aggregates alone exist, what is said is thus a very profound meaning, and it is spoken to those who cannot understand reality. In which sutra is it taught that the ālaya-vijñāna and the person, and the aggregates that are without self, alone exist? This is taught in order to gradually lead those sentient beings who have long been accustomed to the views of non-Buddhists, who cannot understand the profound meaning of emptiness, who are afraid when they hear of emptiness, and who turn their backs on the teachings. Because when the ālaya-vijñāna and so forth are first taught to them, they will think that even though there is no self or Īśvara as the non-Buddhists believe, it is acceptable to have the ālaya-vijñāna and so forth as the basis of karma and its results, and of samsara and nirvana, and thus they will enter the Sugata's teachings. Later, when they correctly understand the meaning of the scriptures, they will themselves abandon their attachment to the ālaya-vijñāna and so forth, and only virtues will arise, and no faults will be incurred. As Āryadeva said: Whatever someone likes, let him use it first; if it is damaged, it is not a vessel of the true Dharma. As it is said. Not only is the ālaya-vijñāna and so forth taught as a means of introduction, but also, even though one is free from the view of the aggregates, the Buddha taught "I" and "mine" as such. Likewise, although things have no inherent existence, they are taught as existing in a provisional sense to guide beings. Even though all views of the aggregates have been abandoned, and "I" and "mine" no longer exist, the terms "I" and "mine" and so forth are methods for understanding worldly phenomena. Therefore, just as the Buddha Bhagavān taught "I" and "mine" at that time and at that moment, likewise, although things have no inherent existence, the internal and external phenomena such as form and feeling are taught as existing in a provisional sense to guide beings. As it is said in the verses corresponding to the Eastern Mountain School:
