This is to show its true meaning. The first point is: Because there is no self-nature in both truths, not only is the fault of permanence and annihilation avoided, but even without a basis for karma such as the Alaya, the relationship between karma and its result is reasonable. Like this: Because it does not cease by its own nature, therefore it can be achieved even without the Alaya. In some cases, even if the karma has ceased for a long time, you should understand that a true result will still arise. To answer the question of how a past karma that has ceased for a long time can produce a result, some believe that there is an Alaya with the habit of past karma. Some believe that there are other dharmas similar to loan guarantees that do not disappear. Others believe that it pervades the continuum of consciousness with the habit of karma. Here, because karma is not produced by its own nature, it does not cease by its own nature. Since there is no contradiction in the production of a result from karma that does not cease, even if there is no basis for karma and result such as the Alaya, because the result of past karma can be achieved, in some times and places, even if the karma has ceased for a long time, there is no contradiction in the production of a Vipaka result from the karma, you should know this. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures: Because karma is not born, just like this, there is no self-nature; because it is not born, it will not disappear. As it is said. In order to show the meaning as stated above through an analogy, it is said: From seeing the object of focus in a dream, even when awake, fools will give rise to attachment. Similarly, from karma that has ceased and has no self-nature, there will also be a result. Just as seeing in a dream the enjoyment of desire with a beautiful woman, when waking up, although the woman in the dream does not exist by nature and has disappeared, it will still become the cause for some fools to generate desire and attachment. Similarly, from karma that has ceased and is considered to be without self-nature, there will also be a Vipaka result. If it is believed that because karma has not ceased, a Vipaka result will arise, then how to explain the karma that has not produced a Vipaka result?

If someone asks, since the maturation has already arisen, why will it still produce fruit? Because it has not ceased. Answer: It is not like that. For example: Just as the object is essentially non-existent, yet those with cataracts see hair-like streaks, but do not see other objects. Likewise, know that from maturation, non-maturation arises again. Just as the object, hair-like streaks, and rabbit horns, etc., are equally non-existent, yet those with eyes afflicted by cataracts see the appearance of hair-like streaks in the sky, etc., but do not see the appearance of other objects like rabbit horns. Similarly, the actions that have and have not produced maturation are equally unceasing and without inherent existence, but the actions that have not previously produced fruit will again produce maturation, while the actions that have previously produced maturation will not produce fruit again. From the example just given, it is not only certain that actions that have and have not produced fruit will again produce maturation and not produce maturation, but it is also certain that the maturation of virtue and non-virtue are distinct. For example: Therefore, the maturation of non-virtue arises from black actions, and the maturation of virtue is seen to arise from virtuous actions. Without virtue or non-virtue, without thought, one attains liberation, therefore, one should prevent contemplation on actions and their results. Precisely because one sees that hair-like streaks, etc., are non-existent yet definitely seen, therefore, although virtuous and non-virtuous actions are without inherent existence, the maturation that is non-virtuous and unpleasant arises from black, non-virtuous actions, and not from virtuous actions; and the maturation that is virtuous and pleasant is seen to arise from virtuous actions, and not from non-virtuous actions. Any wise person who is without attachment to both virtuous and non-virtuous actions will attain liberation. Thus, because it is very difficult to understand how actions without inherent existence produce results and how maturation is determined, if ordinary people do not understand these and instead slander the results of actions, then it will be seen that conventional truth will be destroyed. Therefore, the Bhagavan forbade children from thinking about the results of actions, saying that the results of actions are inconceivable. Here, it should be understood that the meaning is this: Thus, the Madhyamikas

It is not to completely sever certain connections of cause and effect, because that would harm one's own tenets. What then? It is merely to eliminate the wrong conceptions of others who argue that the relationship of cause and effect is unreasonable. Is it not true that there is no relationship of cause and effect at all? If so, how can one refute the slanders of others against cause and effect? The truth is that although cause and effect are without inherent existence, if children who do not understand this hastily slander cause and effect, they will fall into the great abyss of the three lower realms because they engage in the acceptance and rejection of virtue and vice in a reversed manner. Therefore, the holy ones must refute the wrong conceptions of others regarding the relationship of cause and effect. Like nihilists, how could Madhyamikas, who have not seen any relationship of cause and effect, not have wrong views about cause and effect and engage in acceptance and rejection in a reversed manner? For example, if someone commits theft, some people see it as it is and say, "This person has stolen." Others, because they are not friendly with him, deliberately do not see it, but also say, "This person has stolen." Although both say that the theft has occurred, the former does not lie because he states the truth as it is, while the latter lies because he pretends to have seen it without seeing the basis. Similarly, how can it be the same for Madhyamikas who, having ascertained with correct reasoning that all phenomena are without inherent existence, say that cause and effect are without inherent existence, and nihilists who, while having strong attachment to the things they see, slander the unseen cause and effect? It is not that Madhyamikas, like nihilists, do not engage in the acceptance and rejection of virtue and vice, but just as from an image without inherent existence arises the awareness that appears there, they see that desirable and undesirable results arise from virtuous and non-virtuous actions without inherent existence without any contradiction. Therefore, like a magician dealing with illusions, they engage in acceptance and rejection without reversing it, in a way that is free from any attachment. The basis of the relationship of cause and effect is the ālaya-vijñāna, or they acknowledge the existence of a person (pudgala) and so on.
