Then, why is it like water? Because the seedling of bodhicitta, until it gives rise to the perfect fruit, which is the ultimate state of Buddhahood, will continuously and gradually grow, without remaining in an intermediate state. Like this, even if bodhicitta has arisen, if it is not frequently watered with the water of compassion afterwards, then one will become lazy in accumulating vast two accumulations for the benefit of others for a long time. If one does not accumulate vast accumulations of fruition, then one will definitely attain the state of a Hearer or a Solitary Realizer, and completely enter into Nirvana. Therefore, compassion is like water, which nourishes the Dharma of the Buddhas. Why is it like ripening? Because the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, although they have attained the Dharmakaya, which is free from all elaborations, due to the power of great compassion that is fully ripened, they will continuously turn the wheel of Dharma with the Rupakaya until the end of samsara. Therefore, the fruits of the noble assembly will be transmitted one after another, without interruption, and will grow for a long time. If compassion is not fully ripened, even if one has attained the vast state of fruition, one will manifest Nirvana, and will not enjoy the bliss of Dharma for a long time. Therefore, the fruits of the noble assembly will not be transmitted one after another, and will not grow. Therefore, compassion is like ripening. Second, describing the nature from the perspective of object and aspect, praising compassion: Compassion also has three aspects due to the difference in objects, namely, compassion towards sentient beings, compassion towards phenomena, and objectless compassion. The first is to focus on sentient beings as real entities, wishing them to be free from suffering. The second is to focus on the mere phenomena of the aggregates, nominally designated as sentient beings, wishing them to be free from suffering. The third is to focus on sentient beings as illusory, wishing them to be free from suffering. The first is possessed by ordinary beings. The second is possessed by Hearers and Solitary Realizers. The third is

is the domain of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas. Those who believe that Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the absence of self of phenomena assert this. Here, the latter two kinds of compassion are differentiated from the perspective of being opposites, while being of the same essence. Moreover, it will be explained that these two kinds of compassion exist in all noble beings. Therefore, for the moment, in order to make manifest the distinct characteristics of the compassion that focuses on sentient beings, wanting to begin paying homage to it, it is said: To that which has become compassion for beings who, firstly, are manifestly attached to self, and having grasped the basis of 'mine' in things, are without autonomy like a series of water buckets, I prostrate! Thus it is said. Therefore, it is paying homage. To whom? To that which has become compassion, characterized by the desire to liberate beings from suffering and the causes of suffering. What kind of beings? Like a series of water buckets drifting, they drift helplessly in beginningless samsara due to the power of karma and afflictions. From what cause do they drift? They drift from manifest attachment to self, firstly being manifestly attached to the aggregates that are their own basis of appropriation as self, and then grasping sentient beings and non-sentient things that should not be grasped as self as 'mine'. How are beings similar to a series of water buckets? They are similar in six ways, namely: like this, a series of water buckets has six characteristics: being bound by a rope, being under the control of another maker, revolving in a well, going down of its own accord and having to be pulled up with effort, being unable to determine the order of beginning, middle, and end, and having the nature of being worn away day by day. Just as six characteristics can be discerned in a series of water buckets, so too can six characteristics be discerned in beings, namely: like this, these worldly beings who are manifestly attached to self and 'mine' are tightly bound by the rope of karma and afflictions; they depend on the actions of the maker of the machine of consciousness to engage; they drift uninterruptedly in the great well of samsara, deep from the peak of existence down to Avici hell; they themselves tend towards the lower realms of the three bad destinies
