is the cause of Nirvana. Secondly, the praise of the Bodhisattva's generosity is particularly outstanding: Those sentient beings who vow to benefit others, quickly attain joy through generosity. Those who are not Bodhisattvas, because they hope for the fruition of generosity, the enjoyment of the fruits of generosity does not occur simultaneously with the act of giving, so it is possible that they may not engage in generosity. Those sentient Bodhisattvas who have vowed to benefit all beings and have generated the mind of enlightenment, enjoy the fruits of generosity at the same time as they give, because they do not hope for the fruition of generosity, but only desire the happiness of others. Soon after giving, just seeing the beggars satisfied, they attain joy in their hearts. Therefore, at all times, they are happy to give. This is true for both compassionate and non-compassionate beings, so the words of praise for generosity are considered the root. The cause of higher rebirth and definite goodness for both compassionate Bodhisattvas and non-compassionate beings is generosity, therefore the words of praise for generosity are considered the root of all goodness. What causes Bodhisattvas to respect generosity? What is the difference in joy of the Bodhisattvas arising from seeing the satisfied faces of the beggars? Just as upon hearing the words "Please give," in the mind, joy arises for the princes, in the same way, even the Buddhas, entering into peace, cannot create joy, so what need is there to say more about giving up everything, and observing the joy of the Bodhisattva at the moment of seeing and hearing the satisfied bodily gestures of the beggars? Thus, when the beggars come before them and say, "Please give us these differences of body and possessions," upon hearing these words, thinking, "These are those who are begging from me," in this situation, the princes repeatedly experience joy in their hearts, in the same way, even the Buddhas, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Buddhas, entering into peaceful Nirvana, cannot create joy, so what need is there to say how great is the difference in joy of the Bodhisattva at the moment of seeing and hearing the satisfied bodily gestures of the beggars after giving up all internal and external possessions? Thus, internal and external wealth

So, when Bodhisattvas are giving away everything, giving away their bodies and limbs, etc., does bodily suffering not arise? There are two types of Bodhisattvas: those who abide in the state of non-attachment and those who are attached. For the great beings who abide in the state of non-attachment, it is impossible for bodily suffering to arise, just as if cutting something that is without mind, because they see the body as without inherent existence. Therefore, in the Samadhi of the Noble Akashagarbha, it says: 'For example, there is a great grove of Sala trees, and someone comes and cuts down one Sala tree. The remaining Sala trees do not think, "This one has been cut down, we have not been cut down." They do not have attachment or anger towards it. There is no conception or discrimination. Whatever such patience of a Bodhisattva is, this is the supreme, completely pure patience, equal to space.' It is said. Also, in the Ratnavali, it says: 'For him there is no bodily suffering, How could there be mental suffering? He suffers for the world with compassion, He abides long by that very means.' This is what is said. For the great beings who have not attained the state of non-attachment, bodily suffering does arise. However, their suffering becomes a cause for engaging in the benefit of sentient beings, driven by compassion, like this: 'Cutting and giving the body, with my suffering, Seeing the suffering of others, such as hells, as self-knowing, For the sake of cutting that, he strives.' When a Bodhisattva experiences the suffering that arises from cutting and giving away the body, from that he infers that the suffering of other sentient beings in the three lower realms, such as hells, is a hundred times greater than this. Not being able to bear their suffering, he sees it as self-knowing. Disregarding the suffering of cutting his own flesh, etc., in order to continuously cut off their suffering, that Bodhisattva greatly increases his effort. Third, in order to show the difference between worldly and transcendental perfections, in general,

Devoid of giving, what is given, receiver, and giver, it is called the transcendence beyond the world. Thus it is said. This generosity is also completely encompassed by the Perfection of Wisdom. If the act of giving, the receiver, and the giver are empty and free from attachment, then it is the transcendence beyond the world. As the Blessed Mother, the Perfection of Wisdom, has said. Not focusing on the three spheres is why it transcends the world. This is not something possessed by those who have not attained the state of a truly realized Bodhisattva. Furthermore, attachment arises towards the three, and it is shown as the worldly perfection. In what generosity? When attachment arises and manifest clinging occurs towards the three: what is given, the receiver, and the giver, then it is shown as the worldly perfection. Focusing on the three spheres is included in the conventional truth, therefore it is worldly. The third is the teaching of concluding by way of praising the qualities of the ground: Thus, the victorious son abides in the mind, the light gathers on the sacred support, this joy is beautiful like crystal, it dispels all darkness and triumphs. As explained above, this Very Joyful Ground completely dispels all the dense darkness of its opposing side and becomes victorious. Like what example? Like a completely full moon made of crystal. What is this Very Joyful Ground like? It abides in the mind of the victorious son who has attained the first generation of the mind of enlightenment, and on the sacred support, the mind of enlightenment, the light of non-conceptual wisdom gathers, and it is beautiful because it is free from the stains of opposing sides. In the "Entering the Middle Way," the so-called Very Joyful Ground is an explanation of the first generation of the mind of enlightenment of a Bodhisattva. Commentary on the First Chapter.
